Create a lovely pillow on any machine with decorative stitches to enhance ordinary appliquÈ or simply use an embroidery machine if you want to create your own lace. Simply select a decorative stitch for the second row around the appliquÈs. Makes a wonderful Valentine's project.

Janome Supplies Required:
For Any Janome Machine

  • Any Janome sewing machine or serger.
  • Pintuck Foot
  • Appliquè Foot F
  • Janome Embroidery thread to match fabric

    For Janome Embroidery Machine (to make lace)
  • Memory Craft 10000, 9000, 8000, 5700, 5000
  • Card Reader 10000 or Memory Craft Reader/Writer Box (for MC10000 only)
  • Memory Card 129 (K-Lace Designs) or Memory Card 39 (K-Lace Series)
  • Embroidery Hoop for your Memory Craft
  • Embroidery Foot P
  • Blue Tip Needle Size 75/11
  • Madiera Cotton thread (White or Antique White)
  • Super Solvy stabilizer

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • Twin needle size 1.6 mm
  • 1 yd. cotton print fabric (Sheryl used fabric with small pink and rose flowers and a black background)
  • 1/2 yd. dark moirè fabric (Sheryl used a dark rose color)
  • 1/3 yd. light moirè fabric (Sheryl used a light pink color)
  • 1/2 yd. flat off white lace, 1" wide
  • 1/2 yd. fusible fleece/batting
  • Black all purpose thread
  • Heat N Bond Lite
  • Water-soluble marking pen
  • Scissors, paper scissors, and pins
  • 14" pillow form
  • 56" off white crochet or cluny lace (if you are not creating your own lace)

Fabric Preparation:

  1. Cut a 12" square of the dark moirè fabric.
  2. Cut two strips 2 ?" x 12" and two strips 2 ?" x 15 ?" of the print fabric.
  3. Cut a 13" square of fusible fleece/batting.
  4. Cut two pieces of light pink fabric 6" x 4".
  5. Cut three pieces of print fabric 6" x 4".
  6. Cut one piece 15 ?" x 14" and one 15 ?" x 8" of print fabric for the pillow back.


Creating K-Lace:

  1. Set up Memory Craft for Professional Style Embroidery. Thread the machine with the Madeira thread on top and in the bobbin.
  2. Insert Memory Card #129 into the Memory Craft. For Memory Craft 10000 owners, insert the Memory Card into the Card Reader 10000 or Memory Craft Reader/Writer Box.
  3. Please refer to the instructions in the Memory Card case for correct stabilization for the embroidered lace.
  4. Select design #9. You will need to stitch twelve times.
  5. Select design #10. You will need to stitch four times.
  6. After the pillow is assembled (steps 7-21), attach three of design #9 together and sew to the pillow top along each side. One each of design #10 will be placed in each corner.


Instructions:

Note: Stitch pattern numbers indicated are for the Memory Craft 10000. (Memory Craft 9000 stitch patterns are indicated in parenthesis).

  1. Sewing a º" seam allowance, attach the 2 º" x 12" strips to opposite sides of the square. Press seams out.
  2. Attach the 2º" X 15 ?" strips to the remaining sides. Press seams out.
  3. Iron the fusible fleece to the back.
  4. Select Stitch #53. Set the width to 7.0 and length to 0.3. Stitch just to the inside edge of the seam on the right side of the moirè.
  5. Insert the twin needle. Attach the Pintuck Foot. Rethread the machine using a Janome Embroidery thread color that matches your fabric. Stitch pintucks in a diamond pattern on one piece of the 6" x 4" light moirè fabric. Apply Heat N Bond Lite to the pin tucked piece and cut out one small heart. Set aside.
  6. Apply Heat N Bond Lite to the wrong side of the 6" x 4" print fabric pieces and cut out two large hearts and one small heart. Set aside.
  7. Apply Heat N Bond Lite to the remaining piece of light 6" x 4" moirè fabric and cut out butterfly wings. Set aside.
  8. Apply Heat N Bond Lite to the wrong side of a small print fabric scrap and cut out the body of the butterfly.
  9. Cut two pieces of lace to the desired length. Fold each piece in half at the end and cut a wedge.
  10. Lay the hearts in the upper left corner with the points facing each other and place the lace on the pillow with the edges under the hearts. Pin the lace to the pillow.
  11. Replace the twin needle with a blue tip needle. Rethread the machine on top and in the bobbin with Janome Embroidery thread to match the lace.
  12. Remove the hearts and stitch the lace to the pillow using a zig-zag stitch #8 (same for MC9000). Adjust the width to 2.5 and length to 0.35. Stitch around the outside edges of the lace. Select Stitch #200 (#120 for MC9000) for the second row. As you stitch, the scallop should just touch the satin stitch.
  13. Position the two large hearts in the upper left corner with the points facing each other to form a bow. Fuse in place.
  14. Change upper thread to match appliquè fabric. Select Stitch #8. Adjust the width to 2.0 or 2.5 and the length to 0.35. Satin stitch around the heart, beginning and ending on one side of the heart. Select Stitch #186 (#101 for MC9000) and stitch around the hearts beginning and ending at the points.
  15. Position the printed fabric heart in the lower right corner. Fuse and appliquè, using Stitch #8, width 1.5 or 2.0 and length 0.35. Select a stitch and stitch around the edge of the appliquè heart or select Stitch #188 or #103 for MC9000.
  16. Change upper thread to match appliquè fabric. Position the butterfly wings in the upper right corner and fuse in place. Select Stitch # 96 (#85, size 80% for MC9000) to divide the wings. Select Stitch #117, width 5.0 and length 0.2 (#124 for MC9000). Appliquè around the butterfly wings.
  17. Fuse the body in place on top of the butterfly wings. Select Stitch #8, width 1.5 and length .35 and stitch around the body. For the antenna, select Stitch #8, width 1.0 and length 035. With your marking pen, draw the antenna for a guide. Select Stitch #189, width 7.0 and length 2.5 (#104 for MC9000) for the second row around the outside of the butterfly.
  18. Position the small, pin tucked heart in the lower left corner. Fuse and appliquè in place using Stitch #8, width 1.5 or 2.0 and length 0.35. Select Stitch #187 (#102 for MC9000) and stitch around the outside of the heart. Use Appliquè Foot F, letting the edge of the appliquè ride just left of the slit in the foot.


Pillow Back Assembly:

  1. Fold under º" on one 15 ?" edge on the 15 ?" x 14" and on the 15 ?" x 8" printed fabric pieces. Straight stitch along fold.
  2. Fold the finished edge of the 15 ?" x 14" piece under another 3 ?" and pin to the front side of the pillow right sides together.
  3. Pin the 15 ?" x 8" piece to the opposite side of the pillow front right sides together, folding the finished edge 2?" under.
  4. Sew around the pillow edge using a ?" seam allowance. Turn pillow right side out.
  5. Hand sew lace (purchased or embroidered) to the inside perimeter of the pillow front.
  6. Insert pillow form.
