Instructions For Heirloom Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game
- Border Lines - On the 9" square of batiste, measure in 1 1/2" from the outer edge on all four sides and draw a line using the fabric marking pen, .
- From the drawn line, measure in 2" and mark two horizontal and two vertical lines on the batiste.
- Allowing the Lace Beading to extend 1/4" beyond the border line, center the Lace Beading over the horizontal and vertical lines and baste in place by hand. Select a straight stitch, length 2.2. Stitching through the heading on the lace; sew the lace strips to the batiste.
- Turn the work over and cut the batiste from under the lace on the marked lines. Snip from the ends to the stitching in the heading at the end of each row.
- Fold the batiste back toward the heading in the beading and finger-press. Select a zigzag stitch; adjust the stitch width to 1.5 and length to 0.5. Place white Janome Embroidery thread in the needle. Beginning at the right side, sew over the heading in the Lace Beading.
- Repeat steps 3 through 5 for the other three pieces of lace beading. Run the ribbon through the beading and baste at each end to secure.
- Place the Lace Edging on the Border Lines. Starting at one end, with the end of the lace extending 1/2" past the drawn corner, pin the lace in place. Miter the corners as you pin. Straight stitch in the heading of the lace with a length of 2.2. Trim the fabric from under the lace. On the right side, zigzag the Lace Edging using Janome #001 (White) Embroidery thread, width 1.5 and length .05.
- If you don't have an embroidery machine use purchased buttons for game pieces: five each of two different designs/colors.
Embroidering Covered Buttons
- For covered buttons use two layers of batiste and stabilize when embroidering. Select pattern 11 from Memory Card #102 (Floral Art & Quilting). Place hoop on the Memory Craft. Press the EDIT KEY to clear all previous patterns if necessary.
- Move the pattern all the way to the top and left of the Edit Screen, press OK.
- Sew step 1 with Janome Embroidery thread #204 (Yellow) and step 2 with #227 (Pale Aqua).
- Note: Five button covers are sewn with a Yellow and Pale Aqua thread combination and five button covers are sewn with a Yellow and #240 (Orchid Pink) thread combination.
- When you are finished sewing one design, leave the hoop on the Memory Craft and press the EDIT KEY. Move the pattern across to the middle of the screen and sew. Move the next pattern all the way across to the right of the screen.
Note: If you sew three across at the top and three across at the bottom, six flowers can be stitched at one time in the hoop. Remember on the sixth flower to change thread color combinations.
- Following manufacturer's directions, cover the buttons and you will have your Tic-Tac-Toe pieces.
Extra Hint: I found it very helpful to spray the top of the button piece to be covered with Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive. The embroidery can then be centered over the button and will not slip.

Instructions For Flannel Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game:
- Download X and O to scan.
Requires the free Acrobat Reader 3.0 or greater.
- Apply the iron-on adhesive to the back of the 13 1/2" square following manufacturer's directions. To mark the size of the game board, draw a line 3/4" from the edge on each side of the fabric square. Divide and mark the game board into nine (4") squares.
- Select a decorative stitch on your sewing machine. Sew on the marked lines of the game board to section off the squares. Do not sew on the lines that were marked 3/4" from the edge.
- Apply the iron-on adhesive to the back of the 15 1/2" square following manufacturer's directions. With wrong sides together, center the 13 1/2" square on top of the 15 1/2" square. Fuse the two pieces together. Finger press 1/4" under on the15 1/2" piece. Fold to the front of the board on the marked lines. Pin in place, mitering the corners. Stitch using embroidery thread #242 ( Burgundy) and stitch #5 (Triple Stretch Stitch).
- Scan the X and O for the game pieces. When scanning, assign the straight stitch to the oval border first, then a 3mm stitch over the straight stitch. Choose a fill stitch for the letters.
- To stitch letters, hoop two pieces of water-soluble stabilizer and attach hoop to the carriage. Select the letter to be embroidered, press the EDIT KEY to clear all previous patterns. Move your pattern all the way to the top and left, and press OK.
- Place two layers of fabric on top of the hoop and stitch the first color, which is the outline stitch. Remove the hoop from the carriage and trim the fabric close to the stitching line. Place the hoop back on the machine and embroider the letter.
- When you are finished sewing the letter, leave the hoop in place, press the EDIT KEY and move the pattern to the middle of the screen and sew the next letter. Move the next letter to be sewn all the way to the right on the Edit Screen. Three letters can be sewn before re-hooping.
- Remove the stabilizer after embroidering five of each letter. You now have finished the Tic-Tac-Toe pieces.
Make A Border Around the Letters: For the sample, an oval border was sewn around the"X"s and "O"s. To create the oval border, scan the letter using the Scan ‘n Sew PC. Assign an outline stitch to the letter. Make and save the design. Open the design in Paint. From the toolbar at the left select an oval and drag around the letter. Save and re-open in EasyScan. The design will be found under Bitmap Files.
