Try creating this advanced quilt block with Maddie's easy techniques. You will be sure to get successful results! The embroidery adds to the 3-D effect of the Tumbling Block pattern. Maddie chose to turn her quilt block into this very useful clothespin holder. Or, you can create an entire quilt.

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Memory Craft 11,000,10000, 10001, 9500, 5700, 5000. 300E, 350E (embroidery only)
  • Card Reader 10000
  • Memory Card #130 (Alpine Flower Designs)

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • 1/3 yd. light green cotton
  • 1/3 yd. dark green cotton
  • 1/3 yd. print cotton
  • 1/8 yd. dark purple cotton
  • 1 yd. lavender polka dot cotton
  • Tear away stabilizer
  • Starmaker_ 6
  • Plastic template sheet
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Child's plastic hanger

Fabric Preparation:

  1. Cut three 9" squares from light green fabric.
  2. Properly stabilize light green squares for embroidery.
  3. Cut three 3 1/2" diamonds from the print fabric, using the Starmaker_ 6 rule.
  4. Cut twelve 1" x 5" strips from dark purple fabric.


Professional-Style Enbroidery:

  1. Set up the MC10000 for Professional-Style Embroidery.
  2. Connect the Card Reader 10000 to the machine.
  3. Insert Memory Card #130 (Alpine Flower Designs) into the Card Reader 10000 or use embroidery design of choice..
  4. Press the Embroidery Mode key.
  5. Press the Edit tab.
  6. Press the Card Reader tab. Select Design #14.
  7. Press the Size key. Reduce the design to 90%.
  8. Press the Color key. Change the 2nd color for the flower petals to #240, the same as the first color.
  9. Change the color of the leaves so that both are color #248.
  10. Place 1st stabilized square in the Standard Hoop "A" using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
  11. Stitch design.
  12. Press the Edit tab.
  13. Press the Color key. Change the color of both flower petals to #201.
  14. Place 2nd stabilized square in the Standard Hoop A using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
  15. Stitch design.
  16. Press the Edit tab.
  17. Press the Color key. Change the color of both flower petals to #201.
  18. Press the Size key. Increase to 120%.
  19. Press the Horizontal Flip key to mirror image design.
  20. Place 3rd stabilized square in the Standard Hoop A using the Clothsetter 10000 for perfect placement.
  21. Stitch design.
    Note: When the Memory Craft 10000 starts to stitch out the second flower, manually change the thread to #240.


Construction:

  1. Set up the MC10000 for Ordinary sewing.
  2. Attach the 1/4" Foot O.
  3. Select Straight stitch #1. Adjust the length to 1.8.
  4. Sew one 1" x 5" purple strip to one print diamond, using the log cabin quilting technique.
  5. Press seams toward the dark purple.
  6. Continue adding 1" dark purple strips to the diamond until all four sides are bordered. True sides.
  7. Place the bordered diamond under a piece of plastic template and trace the outline.
  8. Using the plastic template cut out three dark green diamonds.
  9. Using the plastic template cut out three diamonds from the embroidered squares.
    Note: Mark center lines on the plastic template and the fabric so that the flowers are in the center of the diamond.
  10. Sew the embroidered light green diamonds to the dark green diamonds.
    Hint: The light green should be on the left when right side up.
  11. Press seam to the dark green.
  12. On both sides of the seam, make a small nip.
  13. On the third diamond, that has been bordered with dark purple, clip off 1/8" of the corner that will intersect with the seam on the other two diamonds.
  14. Place the bordered diamond on top of the light green embroidered diamond, right sides together.
  15. Where the seams intersect (underneath) make a small dot with the fabric marking pen.
  16. Stitch to the dot.
  17. With the needle in the down position, pull the bordered diamond around to match up with the dark green diamond.
  18. Using your seam ripper, sweep away any bunched up fabric from around the underneath of the needle.
  19. Once the fabric is laying flat stitch to the other end of the diamond.
  20. Clip off excess seam allowance where diamonds intersect. Press from the wrong side.
  21. Repeat steps 10 - 20 to create two more tumbling blocks.
  22. Sew the two blocks together that have the small flowers, using the same technique.
  23. Add the third block, using the tumbling block assembly technique.
  24. Cut out three lavender polka dot diamonds, using the plastic template.
  25. Add one lavender polka dot diamond to the left of the top tumbling block, using the same technique.
  26. Sew another lavender polka dot diamond to the right of the top tumbling block.
  27. Sew the remaining lavender polka dot diamond at the bottom in the center of the two bottom tumbling blocks.
  28. Cut two corner pieces from the lavender polka dot fabric, using the pattern piece provided.
  29. Sew one corner piece to the corner to the left of the tumbling block at the bottom.
    Note: It will overlap the center lavender polka dot diamond.
  30. Sew the other corner piece to the corner to the right of the tumbling block at the bottom.
  31. Cut straight across the bottom. Leave 1 1/4" seam allowance away from the point of the two bottom tumbling blocks.
  32. Cut two 1 1/2" x 12" strips of lavender polka dot fabric.
  33. Sew one of the strips to the left of the tumbling. Trim to true edge.
  34. Sew the other strip to the right hand side of the tumbling block. Trim to true edge.
  35. Cut two 2 1/2" x 12" strips of lavender polka dot fabric.
  36. Sew one strip to the top left hand corner of the tumbling block. Trim to true edge.
  37. Sew the other strip to the top right hand corner of the tumbling block. Trim to true edge.
  38. Cut a 15 1/2" square to be the finished back to the tumbling block front.
  39. With wrong sides together pin the tumbling block front to the matching lavender polka dot section.
    Note: From this point you will threat this as one piece of fabric.
  40. Cut two 7 1/2" x 15" pieces for the back from lavender polka dot fabric. Pin pieces right sides together.
  41. Sew down 3" from the top and 6" up from the bottom. This will leave an opening for entering your hand to retrieve clothespins.
  42. Press seam open including the un-sewn section.
  43. Attach the Satin Stitch Foot F.
  44. Adjust the length to 2.4.
  45. Topstitch the sides and the opening of the back.
  46. Place the child's plastic hanger at the top of the back.
  47. Using a fabric marking pen trace the shoulders of the hanger.
  48. Leave a 2" section for inserting the hook of the hanger.
  49. Layer tumbling block front to back, right sides together.
  50. Sew on the traced line along the side seams and top. Do not sew the bottom.
  51. Turn in bottom corners 1" to form gussets. Secure with pins.
  52. Sew across the bottom.
  53. Turn right side out.
  54. Turn under top opening. Press.
  55. Hand stitch the hem of the top opening.
