Inside Information:
Never used a Knee Presser Foot Lift before? Here are some tips... If you are accustomed to a knee position for the machine's power control, try switching to your left foot for the foot control. Separating the two functions to different legs is more comfortable, and easier on your body! To get used to the knee lift function, get a preprinted quilt panel that has lots of corners to pivot on--any pattern with lots of sharp angles or squares. Layer your "cheater" quilt with batting and backing, attach your walking foot, and start straight line quilting, using the knee lift as much as possible to turn corners. By the time you're done, you'll be comfortable with this great Janome feature, and will use it in place of your hands to raise the presser foot-a big time saver!
  1. To create a fringe edge on the squares, use a pin to pull out cross-threads to line of stitching on all sides.
  2. Trace three maple leaf shapes, nine holly leaves, and nine red berry shapes onto paper-backed fusible web. Iron on to the back of the appropriate colored cotton fabrics. Cut out traced shapes, and remove paper backing.
  3. Place shapes on each of the six cotton lamè squares, three holly squares and three leaf squares. With iron, press in position, using low to medium setting with pressing cloth.
Note: Test on scrap first to make sure iron is not too hot. Cotton lamè will melt if ironed at too high a temperature.
  4. Using the pictures as a guide, trace vein lines onto maple and holly leaf shapes with water soluble pen.
  5. Insert Red Tip needle.
  6. Place Janome Gold Metallic thread in needle and thread that coordinates with fabric in the bobbin.
  7. Attach Open Toe Satin Stitch Foot F2.
  8. With stabilizer underneath of each fringed square, stitch outside edges of leaves and berries as follows (testing on scrap piece first, adjusting tension if necessary);
    * Outside edges of holly leaves and berries: Mode 1, stitch #08 (zigzag); adjusted stitch width 2.5, stitch length .25.
    * Maple leaves: Mode 2, stitch #35 on the Memory Craft 6500, or Mode 2, stitch #37 on the Memory Craft 6600, (appliquè) adjusted stitch width 3.0, stitch length default setting of 2.5 (for variety, stitch tan center maple leaf with satin stitch used for outside edge of holly leaves, or try one of the other appliquè stitches #33-37 on the Memory Craft 6500, or stitches #35-39 on the Memory Craft 6600, to get a look you like).
    * Inside veins of holly and maple leaves: Mode 1, stitch #08 (zigzag); adjusted stitch width 1.5, stitch length .25.

Hint: Try this technique for stitching a tapered vein for the main stem of the maple leaves: Select Mode 1, stitch #08 (zigzag), adjust the stitch width to 1.5, stitch length to .25. Insert the fabric under the presser foot at the center top of the leaf. Place your right index finger on the plus side of the stitch width key. As you sew, touch the plus side of the width indicator approximately one touch per second, ending the taper stitch at the end of the stem with a 6.0 stitch width. Practice this technique first on a test piece of fabric with stabilizer underneath. If you reach the 6.0 stitch width before coming to the end, continue sewing at 6.0 width to the end of the stem. Touch the lock stitch button and then scissor button.
  9. Finger press the center of one 14 1/2" x 45" holiday fabric panel.
  10. Place the center fringed 9 1/2" square on point, securing with pins.
  11. Place remaining two squares on point on either side of center square in the same manner.
  12. Sew three squares to each fabric panel, close to fringe, using coordinating thread and a regular straight stitch (Mode 1, stitch #01).
  13. Repeat this procedure for the second side of the table runner.
  14. Layer the two panels with right sides together, adding batting on one side, matching edges. Pin all three layers together.
  15. Straight stitch on long edges only (Short ends will be open) using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams as sewn.
  16. Trim batting 1/16" from stitching with sharp scissors.
  17. Turn fabrics right side out, making sure edges are fully open and flat. Press and pin edges securely.
  18. Straight stitch down each long side of turned and pressed runner using coordinating thread.
  19. Trim batting back approximately 1/2" from selvedge short edges of runner. Fold fabrics inside, hiding selvedge and matching edges.
  20. Using coordinating thread, straight stitch braided fringe to edges of both ends of runner to secure. The braided trim header will show on one side, decorative stitch will attach it on the other. (See step 30)
  21. Select Mode 3, stitch #21 on the Memory Craft 6500, or Mode 3, stitch #24 on the Memory Craft 6600. (Checkerboard).
  22. Press the Elongation key once until X2 appears in the upper right hand corner of the display screen.
  23. Wind metallic gold thread onto bobbin.
  24. Using the Open Satin Stitch Foot F2 with metallic thread in both needle and bobbin, sew down both long sides (with side up that does NOT have the trim header).
  25. Using same decorative stitch and metallic thread sew across remaining trimmed sides with trim header on bottom side.
  26. Attach the Open Toe Walking foot on the Memory Craft 6500, or the Acufeed Foot on the Memory Craft 6600, and quilt through all layers (using thread of choice, and pattern as desired) in remaining areas outside of appliquèd squares.
