Download Diagram as a GIF and print out.
Fabric Preparation:
- Cut fourteen 13" x 13" squares from print fleece.
- Cut twelve 13" x 13" squares from solid fleece.
- Cut one 3" x 13" strip from solid fleece.
Instructions:
- Set up serger for a 4 or 3 thread wide Flatlock stitch.
- Thread the needles with Janome Overlock thread and the loopers with Janome Decorative Overlock thread.
- Adjust tension settings to 1/2 (between zero and one) for the left needle, 1 1/2 for the right needle, 2 for the upper looper and 7 for the lower looper.
Hint – if using a 3 thread with the left needle tension should be at ½.
- Adjust stitch length to 4 and set differential feed to 1.0.
- For a more secure flatlock stitch set the STD/R.H. lever to R.H. Do not disengage knife.
Hint: Test the stitch on scrap of folded fleece to determine if additional adjustments are necessary.
- Fold the 3" x 13" solid strip in half lengthwise.
- Flatlock the solid strip to one of the print squares, wrong sides together. Use 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
- Trim opposite end of square so that it is 13" wide and 11 1/2" long with the band at the top.
- Arrange squares according to diagram.
- Starting at the top left hand corner flatlock the first square to the second square, wrong sides together. Do not trim thread tails.
- Open flatlock seam from the wrong side (ladder stitches).
- Use a pressing cloth and press the seam from the wrong side. Do not let the iron touch the fleece, it will make a mark or melt the fleece.
- Repeat for remaining squares in first row.
- Continue to join squares until you have completed four rows.
- Starting at the bottom flatlock the first square to the second square.
Note: The fifth row is different because you need to include the "pocket" square.
- Open seam and press from the wrong side.
- Place the pocket square under the third square with the decorative stitch facing the wrong side of the third square. The band should be at least 11/2" down from the top of the third square.
Hint: Try this first with pins to see that it is assembled correctly.
- Starting at the bottom, flatlock the second square to the third square with the pocket sandwiched in between.
- Open the seam and press from the wrong side.
- Starting at the bottom flatlock the third square/pocket to the fourth square.
- Open the seam and press from the wrong side.
- Starting at the bottom flatlock the fourth square to the fifth square.
- Open the seam and press from the wrong side. You should now have five rows with five squares.
- Secure the first row to the second row with pins, wrong sides together.
- Match up the seams.
- Smear glue stick where seams match and press firmly.
Hint:This will help prevent the seams from pushing. Remove glue with a moist towel and then open seam and press from the wrong side.
- Flatlock row one to row two.
- Dab seam sealant where seams intersect. Open seam and press from the wrong side.
- Repeat for remaining rows.
- Set up serger for a 3 thread wide Overlock stitch.
- Thread the right needle with Janome Overlock thread.
- Thread the loopers with Janome Decorative Overlock thread.
Hint:You may use Robison Anton 100% 3CC cotton thread in the needle for a more decorative look.
- Adjust tension settings to 4 for the needle, 7 for the upper looper and lower looper. This will produce a "Wrapped Scalloped Stitch".
- Adjust the stitch length to 3.5 and set the differential feed to 1.2.
- Starting at the top left hand corner, serge on the wrong side of the Snuggly. This will wrap the stitch to the right side of the Snuggly.
- Turning clockwise serge the left hand side of the wrong side of the Snuggly.
- Turning clockwise serge the bottom of the wrong side of the Snuggly.
Note:When you approach the pocket square adjust the stitch length to 4 and then back to 3.5 as you approach the fourth square.
- Turning clockwise serge the right hand side of the wrong side of the Snuggly.
- Dab corners with seam sealant and hide thread tails.
- To fold Snuggly into its pocket, fold the rows lengthwise towards the wrong side of the Snuggly.
- Turn the pocket right side out and fold the squares down into the pocket.
