Create a festive table runner with simple to digitize quilt motifs and built in decorative stitches.
Note: Knowledge of the Digitizer Pro or Digitizer 10000 is helpful to complete this project.
Download and print out ornament pattern using the link at the top of this page.
Download the following BMP files by clicking each link below with your right mouse button and choosing "Save Target As". Save them to your favorite folder.
Janome Supplies Required:
- Memory Craft 10001, 10000, 9700, 9500, 300E or Memory Craft 6500 Professional (Decorative Stitches only)
- Digitizer Pro or Digitzer 10000
- USB or RS232C cable, or ATA PC Card
- Clothsetter 10000
- Satin Stitch foot F
- Even Feed foot
- Janome Embroidery thread - #225 (Red) and #226 (Green)
- Blue Tip needle 75/11
Fabric and Notions Required:
- 1/2 yd Holiday print cotton
- 1/2 yd Solid cotton for backing
- 1/2 yd Low loft batting
- 1/4 yd Black cotton
- Four 5" Cotton squares - one each of red, green, purple, yellow
- Black all purpose sewing thread
- Dark monofilament thread
- Pinking shears or rotary cutter with wavy blade
- Fabric glue stick or temporary spray adhesive
At the computer:
- Open Digitizer, EasyDesign.
- Import the "star.bmp".
- Click on the Run Line icon. Left click on the Star at #1. Follow the number sequence with left clicks to complete the star. Press Enter on your keyboard to finish.
- Click on the Select icon. Click on the Object Details icon. Select Run Line, Triple and Stitch Length 3.00mm. Click on OK.
- Save the Star in your favorite file folder, in the *.JEF format, using the name Star. Print a template with crosshairs for perfect placement using the Clothsetter.
- Import the "snail.bmp".
- Click on the Run Line icon. Starting at #1, left click. Continue to follow the number sequence with right clicks to create a curve. End at #26 with a left click. Press Enter on your keyboard to finish.
- Click on the Select icon. Click on the Object Details icon. Select Run Stitch, Triple and Stitch Length 3.00mm. Click on OK.
- Save the Snail in your favorite file folder, in the *.JEF format, using the name Snail. Print a template with crosshairs.
- Import the "motif.bmp".
- Click on the Run Line icon. Starting at #1, left click. Continue to follow the number sequence, left clicking in the center for numbers 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24. Click on Enter on your keyboard to finish.
- Click on the Select icon. Click on the Object Details icon. Select Run Stitch, Single and Stitch Length 3.00mm. Click on OK.
- Save the Motif in your favorite file folder, in the *.JEF format, using the name Motif. Print a template with crosshairs.
- Transfer all three designs to the Memory Craft using USB/RS232C cable or save to an ATA PC Card.
Fabric Preparation:
- Cut a 13" x 27" piece from the holiday print, backing and batting. Cut three 6" squares from the black cotton and two 5" X 10" rectangles.
- Apply glue or spray the wrong side of the black fabric pieces lightly with the spray adhesive. Adhere the black fabric in a pleasing arrangement on one piece of the holiday print
- For the ornaments, stack the red, purple and green 5" squares. Using the ornament pattern, cut a 4" diameter circle through all three layers. Cut the stacked circle into three sections through all the layers.
- Take the circles apart then reassemble the circles using one piece of each color. Place the reassembled circles on the black squares, keeping approximately 1/4" space between the pieces. Use the glue stick or spray adhesive to hold the pieces in place.
- Cut three slightly skewed squares of yellow fabric and add a top to each ornament.
Appliqué:
- Thread the Memory Craft with Black thread. Snap on the Satin Stitch foot F. Select a Scribble Stitch. (See the stitch table for suggested stitches) Appliquè each ornament piece in place.
Professional Style Embroidery:
- Use the spray adhesive to baste the low loft batting to the wrong side of the table runner top. Adhere the wrong side of the backing to the batting side of the table runner top.
- Set up the Memory Craft for Professional Style Embroidery. Use the printed templates and the Clothsetter for accurate placement of the Quilting Motif. Wind a bobbin with red or green Janome Embroidery thread. Thread the needle with desired color of embroidery thread.
- Embroider the Quilt Motifs in random placements on the black rectangles.
Construction and Quilting:
- To duplicate the look of hand quilting with the built in Sculpture Stitch, thread the machine with dark monofilament thread, keep bobbin wound with red or green thread. Select a Sculpture Stitch from the stitch table. Attach the Even Feed foot. Sew around the perimeter of each black block approximately 1/4" from the edge. Sew around the perimeter of the table runner approximately 1/2" from the edge.
- With pinking shears or the wavy rotary cutter trim the outside edges of the table runner.
