It is sometimes difficult to find just the right tablecloth for your round table. If you find the color or print that you like then you cannot find the size you need. Maddie uses a unique way to create her round tablecloth. Now you can make your own using fabrics for any season or holiday. And, so interesting too!

Janome Supplies Required:
Image

  • Any Janome machine
  • Zig-zag Foot A
  • Blue Tip needle 75/11

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • 3 yds. holiday print fabric
  • 2/3 yd. fall print fabric
  • 3 yds. fall solid fabric
    Image
  • 2/3 yd. red solid fabric
  • All purpose thread
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Ruler
  • Glue stick

Template Instructions:

  1. Draw a 22" circle on a piece of poster board. Cut out circle.
  2. Trace the circle on another piece of poster board. Move down about 3 1/2" to form an oval and trace the new shape. Cut out oval.
  3. Trace the original circle on another piece of poster board.
  4. Draw a line straight across the diameter of the circle.
  5. Draw a line perpendicular to the previously drawn line.
  6. Continue drawing lines until you have eight lines equal distant apart.
  7. Draw a 1" line 2" in from the outer edge of the circle on each of the eight lines.
  8. Draw a line lengthwise down the center of the oval poster board.
  9. Place the oval on top of the circle with the eight lines and match up the straight line and the 2" line to form a scallop.
  10. Trace the curve and move on to the next line until all eight lines on the circle have traced curves.
  11. Cut out the curves and set aside. This is the "center template".
Fabric Preparation
  1. On the wrong side of the holiday print fabric trace eight ovals. Do not cut.
  2. On the wrong side of the red solid fabric trace one circle. Do not cut.
  3. Cut out the circle and ovals 1/4" away from the traced lines.
Note: The traced line is your sewing line so do not cut too close to the line.
  4. With right sides together place the cut out red solid circle on top of the fall print fabric. Secure with pins and cut away the excess fall print fabric.
  5. With right sides together place the cut out holiday print ovals on top of the fall solid fabric. Secure with pins and cut away the excess fall solid fabric.

Instructions
  1. Set up your machine for Ordinary sewing.
  2. Select Straight stitch #1. Adjust the length to 1.8.
  3. Sew the eight ovals and the one circle on the marked lines.
Note: Sew all the way around each circle. Do not leave an opening.
  4. Trim if needed and then press the sewn seams.
  5. Cut a 3" slit approximately 1" inside the seam on the red side of the center circle.
  6. Turn right side out and press.
  7. Cut a 3" slit approximately 1" inside the seam on the fall solid side of the eight ovals.
  8. Turn right side out and press.
  9. Optional, hand sew the opening closed or dab with glue stick to secure the raw edges.
Hint: Since you will be sewing above and below the slit hand sewing the opening closed may not be necessary.
  10. Place the "center template" on the red solid circle. Measure to be sure it is centered.
  11. Fold all ovals in half lengthwise and mark the center with a pin.
  12. Position the eight ovals so they fit into the scallop sections of the "center template". Overlap or under-lap the sections as you desire.
  13. Match up the center pin on the ovals with the lines on the "center template".
  14. Secure with pins everywhere the ovals overlap and where the center circle meets the ovals. This requires a great many pins but is necessary so that the pieces do not shift.
  15. Turn over tablecloth so that the fall side is up.
  16. Secure the center with pins around the edge.
  17. Turn over tablecloth and remove any pins from the center red section that will interfere with topstitching the fall circle.
  18. Adjust stitch length to 2.6.
  19. Topstitch fall circle. This will catch the tops of the ovals and reduce fabric shifting.
  20. Turn tablecloth over to holiday print side.
  21. Topstitch all ovals.
  22. Turn over tablecloth and topstitch fall side where needed.
  23. When completed all ovals should have topstitching around the entire piece.
