Patchwork and embroidery are the perfect combination to make a pretty pinafore for that special little girl in your life. Nancy selected floral designs to embroider on the patchwork skirt but you can create this with any theme. This is a perfect project for any Janome embroidery machine.

Your favorite little girl will love finding and showing off all the pretty embroidered blocks on her favorite patchwork pinafore!

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Memory Craft 11000, 10001, 10000, 9700, 9000, 5700, 5000, 8000 or 300E
  • Any Janome Serger
  • Any Janome software (for 11000, 10001, 9700, 9500 and 300E)
  • Memory Card #38 (Floral Series 2)
  • Memory Card #125 (Floral Designs II)
  • Memory Craft 8000 Embroidery Design Gallery CD ROM (for 11000, 10001, 9700, 9500 and 300E)
  • Clothsetter
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Embroidery foot P
  • Zig-zag foot A
  • Rotary Even foot
  • Janome Embroidery thread
  • Janome Bobbin thread
  • Blue Tip needle 75/11

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • Butterick #3564
  • 3/8 yd six different cotton fabrics (45" wide)
  • 1/2 yd. cotton fabric (45" wide)
  • 1 fat quarter cotton
  • 3 buttons
  • Tear away stabilizer
  • All purpose thread
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Quilting ruler
  • 1" Bias tape maker

Fabric Preparation Note:Directions are written for a size 2. For the larger sizes cut four 3 1/2" strips and add two strips to each panel in step 1.

  1. Cut three 3 1/2" strips from each of the six colors of fabric.
  2. Cut each strip in half (3 1/2” x 22”).
  3. Set up the serger for a 4-thread Overlock stitch.
  4. Serge the strips together with a 1/4” seam in panels of six strips, as indicated in the Figures 1-6.
    Hint: Place the fabric next to the knife and serge without cutting any fabric.
  5. Press the seams to one side.
  6. Cut each panel into 3 1/2” strips.
  7. Serge one of each strip together to form blocks as indicated in Figure 7.
  8. Serge four blocks together to form a panel the width of the skirt.
  9. Cut out the bodice front and back.
    Note: The pattern was modified so that the pinafore buttons down the back bodice.


Professional-Style Embroidery

  1. Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
  2. Mark crosshairs for selected designs in the center of random squares, as desired.
  3. Properly stabilize fabric.
  4. Position fabric in the embroidery hoop using the Clothsetter for perfect placement.
  5. Embroider motifs of your choice in the center of random squares.
    Note:On our pinafore, Designs #1, #6 and #11 from Memory Card #125 (Floral Series 2) were embroidered.
  6. Embroider a motif in the center of the bodice front.


Construction

  1. Set up the Memory Craft for ordinary sewing.
  2. Attach the Zigzag foot.
  3. Select Straight stitch #1.
  4. Sew the bodice together at the shoulder seams.
  5. Cut off the seam allowance at the neckline and armholes, these will be covered with the contrast binding.
  6. Follow the directions with the bias tape maker to create 1" bias tape from the contrast fabric.
  7. Fold the bias tape in half to and press to create 1/2" double fold bias tape.
  8. Attach the Rotary Even foot and the Bias-tape Attachment.
  9. Insert the bias binding into the Bias-tape Attachment.
    Hint: Insert the binding into the Bias-tape Attachment before screwing the attachment to the foot.
  10. Turn the width guide screw located on the attachment, until the binding is held lightly in place.
  11. Use a pointy tool (i.e. tip of seam ripper or long pin) to insert the neckline completely into the binding through the opening on the left side of the attachment.
  12. Pull the fabric and binding through the guide so that the binding extends behind the foot approximately 1".
  13. Adjust the position of the binding using the adjustment screw on the right side of the Rotary Even Foot so the needle catches the binding approximately 1/16" from the left edge.
  14. Sew the binding to the neckline and armholes of the bodice.
  15. Sew the side seams and complete the construction of the pinafore according to the pattern directions.
