Inside Information:
When selecting yarn for this project look for a very soft to touch medium to light weight yarn. The number of plys refers to the number of stands wound together to form the yarn. Not all 3 ply yarns will be appropriate.
If the yarn is stiff, it does not feed freely through the opening of the foot, or if the yarn catches on the black yarn guide it is not suitable for Brush-out Embroidery.

Knowledge of the Janome Customizer software program is helpful to complete this project.
Fabric preparation for Child's size fleece poncho
- Cut a 32" square of fleece. (The square of fleece can be made any size to fit your child).
- Cut a circular opening approximately 6" in diameter in the center of the fleece square for the neck opening.
Embroidery:
At your Computer
Note: Step by step instructions for using the Brush-out Embroidery designs are located on the Brush-out Embroidery CD-ROM. Insert the Brush-out Embroidery Collection CD into your CD Drive. Open Windows Explorer. Locate your CD drive and click on Brush_Out_01. Four folders and one Help Text Document will appear. If this is the first time you have used the Brush-Out Embroidery CD it is recommended that you print and review the Brush-out Yarn Instructions and Help Text Document.
Selecting the Design
- Insert the Brush-out Embroidery Collection CD into your CD drive. Open Customizer, EasyImport. Click on open Stitch icon. Locate your CD Drive. Double click on the Embroidery Designs folder. Select the design that you wish to sew.
Note: For the ponchos, designs # YR079 (Baby Sheep), YR086 (Puppy), YR091 (Tiger Kitten) and YR097 (Mice) were used.
- Print a template, with crosshairs, for the design/designs selected.
- Send the design to the Memory Craft using direct connection or save to an ATA PC Card.
- For stitching instructions, open Windows Explorer/CD Drive/Brush_Out_01/Design Sewing Info folder. Double click on the number of the design that you have selected. Print out the Design Information.
Professional Style Embroidery
- Set up the Memory Craft according to the instructions on page 2 of the Brush-out Yarn Instructions.
- To embroider on the sweater or fleece cut a piece of Wet N' Set stabilizer large enough to fit the Embroidery Hoop.
Note: Which Embroidery Hoop to use, "A" or "B", would be determined by the design selected.
- Tape the template on the project in desired location for embroidery.
- Moisten the smooth side of the Wet N' Set stabilizer with a wet cloth. Adhere the stabilizer to the wrong side of the project where the embroidery will be sewn.
- Use the Clothsetter, for perfect placement, to set the cloth and stabilizer in the hoop. Place a topping layer of water soluble stabilizer on the sweater or fleece so that the embroidery threads float above the nap of these fabrics.
- Following the Design Information, embroider the design changing the embroidery thread colors as indicated and adding the yarn at the appropriate color changes.
Tip: Pull out several lengths of yarn from the skein to allow it to flow smoothly around the spool pin into the black yarn guide.
Tip: Try a dental floss threader to make threading the yarn through the opening of the foot easier.
- When the embroidery is complete, remove the fabric from the hoop. Remove the water soluble stabilizer located on the top of the project. Use the wire brush from the Wire Brush Kit to brush the yarn areas for a fuzzy texture if desired. Remove the remaining stabilizer after brushing out the yarn.
Finishing the Fleece Poncho
With a large eye yarn needle and a double strand of yarn, whip stitch or buttonhole stitch around the neckline and outside edge.
Appliquèd Tee
Note: If you haven't already, download and print out the Heart Pattern, using the link at the top of this page.
- Cut an 8" square of cotton print and TearAway stabilizer. Embroider a Brush-out Design in the center of the square. For the sample YR012 (Flower Bunny was used).
- Cut an 8" Square of Wet N' Set stabilizer. Adhere the Wet N' Set stabilizer to the wrong side of the t-shirt where the appliquè will be placed.
- Trace the Heart pattern on the paper side of the fusible web.
- Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse the web to the wrong side of the cotton square, taking care not to iron in the areas embroidered with yarn.
- Cut out the Heart. Fuse the Heart to the t-shirt in the desired location, once again avoiding the areas embroidered with yarn.
- Select a built-in decorative stitch on your sewing machine. Place Embroidery thread in the needle and bobbin. Stitch along the raw edge of the appliquè for a finished edge.
What a fun way to extend the life of a slightly worn sweater, or cover up a stain on a t-shirt.
