Level: Advanced

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Any Janome sewing machine
  • Miraclestitcher Kit (Avaiable for all machine types, front loading, high shank, or low shank)
  • Red Tip Needle #14
  • Polyester or nylon Monofilament thread
  • Iron-on, Tear-away stabilizer
  • Fabric marking pen or pencil

Fabric and Notions Required:

  • Fabric -- Your choice, we recommend a heavy fabric such as broadcloth, denim or canvas.
  • Yarn -- Colors used: red, pink, dark green, light green, gold and yellow (one skein of each) Look for soft yarn with subtle texture for the best effect

Instructions Fabric Preparation:

  1. Begin by printing out the design sheet and enlarging to the proper size to fit your project.
  2. Trace the design onto fabric.
Note: This can done by several methods:
    1. Using a carbon paper (as you would use with a tracing wheel) trace the designs with an unsharpened pencil.
    2. Use a light box to draw on the fabric with a fabric marking pen.
    3. Make two copies of the design, one to use and one to keep as a pattern. Pin the paper over the fabric and sew directly through the paper. When completed the excess paper will tear away along the sewing lines.
  3. Stabilize the wrong side of the fabric with an iron-on tear-away stabilizer. This will keep the fabric firm during the sewing process.

Using the Miracle Stitcher:

  1. Attach the Miraclestitcher to your Janome machine. Follow the directions on the package for proper installation.
Note: Take time to experiment with scrap yarn and a scrap fabric to get the feel of how the yarn is sewn and to notice the effects of changing the speed of the machine and the movement of the fabric. Since the fabric is moved by free motion, a little practice will make you feel more comfortable. Try drawing a small circle and working from the outside toward the center.
  2. Assemble your yarns so that they will feed smoothly without snagging.
Note: We recommend using one color at a time, filling all areas with the same color, then moving on to the next color. There is no right or wrong way to apply the yarn in this project, so relax and find the best way to fill in each area with the yarn. This is not a precision project. If you go over the color lines, it won't matter.
  3. When completed your piece will resemble a hand-sewn crewel tapestry.

TIP: Always move the fabric away from you to allow the yarn to follow the sewing pattern. Allow the yarn to flow smoothly, without restriction for an even flow.
