Lazy Daisy Placemat

Here is the perfect placemat for your patio. You will want to make them with seasonal fabric for all the Holidays. It is a delightful addition for those pool, BBQ and family parties! Bright, sunny, fun, and yet functional

Janome Supplies Required:

  • CoverPro 1000CP Cover Hem Machine
  • Two Schmetz Elx705 size 90/14 needles (for CoverPro)

Fabric and Notions:

  • For one placemat:
  • One 15" x 19" piece of blue cotton fabric
  • One 16" x 20" piece of daisy cotton fabric
  • One 6" square of daisy cotton fabric cut into a pentagon shape (see pattern)
  • Two 3" x 15" strips of daisy cotton
  • Two 3" x 19" strips of daisy cotton
  • One spool of 1/4" yellow ribbon - approximately 10 yard
  • 15" x 19" fusible iron on interfacing
  • 16" x 20" piece of cotton batting
  • Four spools Robison Anton Super Brite polyester thread - yellow
  • One spool Robison Anton 304 Super Polyester Decorative Floss - yellow
  • Fabric marking pen

Fabric Preparation:

  1. Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the blue cotton fabric.

  2. Adhere pentagon shape daisy fabric to right side of blue fabric in the center of the placemat with washable glue stick.
  3. Cut one section of ribbon to extend approximately 1/2" past one of the sides.
  4. Adhere the ribbon in place with washable glue stick.
  5. Set up CoverPro for 2 needle Coverstitch using the center needle and right needle. Place Robison Anton Super Brite Polyester thread in all three positions. Set all tensions at 5.

  6. Stitch the ribbon in place starting approximately 1/2" before the ribbon and continuing approximately 1/2" beyond the end of the ribbon.
    Note: The two needles will stitch along the edge of the ribbon.
  7. Place another piece of ribbon clockwise over top of the previous piece of ribbon.
  8. Trim excess ribbon and dab with seam sealant.

  9. Stitch the ribbon in place starting approximately 1/2" before the ribbon and continuing approximately 1/2" beyond the end of the ribbon.
  10. Keep adding ribbon until all five sides are covered with the ribbon. This will cover the raw edges of the daisy fabric.
  11. Using a ruler and a fabric marking pen, on the wrong side of the fabric (interfacing), draw lines 1" away from the previously stitched lines.

  12. Set up CoverPro with Robison-Anton Serger Floss in the chain looper.
  13. Adjust center and right needle tensions to 8 and the chain looper to 4.
  14. Guiding the right hand side of the presser foot along the blue lines, stitch all five lines.
  15. Draw one line 1 1/2" in from the long side on the wrong side of the fabric (interfacing).

  16. Continue drawing lines until there are four lines 1 1/2" in from all four sides.
  17. Take one of the 3" x 15" strips of daisy fabric, wrong sides together, fold in half lengthwise and press. The strip should now be 1 1/2" x 15".
  18. Raw edges even, on the right side of the placemat, place the strip on the one of the short ends. Secure with pins.
  19. Serging on the wrong side (interfacing), using the right hand side of the presser as the guide, stitch on the 1 1/2" line to secure the strip in place.
    Note: Stitching on the wrong side of the strip a Decorative 2 needle cover stitch will appear on the right side.
  20. Repeat for the opposite side.
  21. Take one of the 3" x 19" strips of daisy fabric, wrong sides together, fold in half lengthwise and press. The strip should now be 1 1/2" x 19".
  22. Place the strip at the top on the right side of the placemat and secure with pins.
  23. Serge on the wrong side (interfacing), using the right hand side of the presser foot as the guide, stitch on the 1 1/2" line to secure in place.
  24. Repeat for the bottom.
  25. Set up CoverPro for a 3 needle Cover Hem. Place Robison Anton Super Brite polyester in all four positions; adjust all tension settings to 5.
  26. With right sides together, place the front of the placemat on the back piece. Place the batting on the bottom.
    Note: The back will be sandwiched between the front and the batting.
  27. Leaving a 4" opening stitch all four sides.
  28. Trim as needed, turn right side out and press.
  29. To close the opening use fusible webbing strip or hand sew.
