The AcuFeed and Cloth Guide of the new Janome Horizon make it easy to create quilted fabric for this child's jacket. The AcuFeed system perfectly feeds quilted layers through the machine, and the included cloth guide makes it easy to create perfectly straight and even lines of stitching. Try it for yourself!
Janome Supplies Required:
- Precision sewing machine with Dual Feed, such as the MC7700
- AcuFeed foot
- A foot
- Buttonhole foot
- Cloth Guide
- Knee lifter
Fabric and Notions Required:
• Child’s raincoat pattern (The pattern used for the sample raincoat was featured in Ottobre Design Magazine, Autumn 2009 as “Sparrow” lightweight quilted coat. Available at www.ottobredesign.com)
• Coordinating cotton print, 2 yards (includes yardage for binding)
• Cotton flannel, 2 yards
• 5 buttons, ¾”
• 5 inches of 5/8” elastic
• Thread to match fabric
• Removable marker
• Pattern paper
Instructions:
1. Trace the pattern pieces for the jacket from the pattern sheets included in the magazine. Lengthen the sleeve 5” to eliminate the ribbed cuff and create a turned back cuff. Cut pieces from the vinylized cotton, taking care to add seam allowances as directed by the pattern.
2. The coordinating cotton print is quilted to the cotton flannel, and then washed prior to cutting the pieces for the lining. Place each pattern piece on the cotton, and cut a generous rectangle from the cotton and flannel for each pattern piece, allowing for shrinkage due to quilting. Remaining fabric will be used for the jacket binding and button loops.
3. To quilt each block, place the cotton fabric right side up over the matching flannel. Mark a straight line parallel to the grain line for each block of fabric, close to one edge. Set up the MC7700 with matching thread and the AcuFeed foot. Sew along the marked line. Attach the quilt guide. With the AcuFeed foot lowered, adjust the position of the quilt guide by lining up the cloth guide arm with the 1” marking on the plate of the machine. Place the block of the fabric under the foot, positioning the cloth guide along the previous line of stitching. Lower foot and sew the next line of stitching. Continue to sew lines of stitching, positioning the cloth guide for each line in the previous line of stitching. Quilt each block of cotton fabric. When all blocks are quilted, machine wash the blocks using hot water and normal settings. Machine dry.
4. Cut lining pieces from the quilted blocks of fabric.
5. Follow the instructions in the magazine for the jacket construction, omitting references to the ribbed cuffs and ‘iron-on volume fleece’. Finish the sleeves by matching the lower edge of the sleeve and sleeve lining. Bind in the same manner as the rest of the jacket. Fold back the cuff to show the quilted lining.
This completes the child’s raincoat, ready for your favorite child!
