Level: Intermediate - Advanced

A pillow always adds a finishing touch at the top of a bed, perfect for that love seat or just scattered on your favorite couch. Indulge yourself in the pleasure of a bygone era by creating works of art with ribbon, Fil Tire created in Janome Digitizer software and embroidery all sewn on your Memory Craft.
Note: Some knowledge of heirloom sewing, Digitizer 10000 and Customizer 1000 Plus is necessary to complete this project.

Janome Supplies Required:

  • Memory Craft 10001, 10000, 9500, or 300E (embroidery only)
  • Digitizer 10000
  • USB or RS232C cable, or ATA PC Card
  • Standard Hoop A
  • Large Hoop B
  • Clothsetter 10000
  • Zig-zag foot A
  • Embroidery foot P
  • Satin Stitch foot F
  • Buttonhole foot R
  • Janome Embroidery thread - #211 (Pale Pink), #216 (Pale Sky), #245 (Opal Green), #249 (Aquamarine), #253 (Ivory White) and #275 (Canary Yellow)
  • Janome Bobbin thread
  • Blue Tip needle 75/11

Fabric and Notions Required

  • 14" Pillow form
  • 1/2 yd. ecru Linen fabric
  • 2 yds. ecru Insertion Lace
  • 2 1/2 yds. ecru Edging Lace, 21/2" wide
  • 1 1/2 yds. ivory ribbon, 5/8" wide
  • Three ecru buttons
  • All purpose sewing thread
  • Wing needle Size 16
  • 14" square of freezer paper for creating lace template
  • Lace shaping board
  • Glass head pins
  • Blunt-nose scissors and paper scissors
  • Tape measure and ruler
  • Fine tipped water soluble pen
  • Water soluble stabilizer

Fabric Preparation

  1. Cut a 15" x 15" piece of linen for the pillow front.
  2. Cut two pieces 10" wide x 15" long for pillow back.


Pillow Front

  1. Fold the piece of 14" square of freezer paper in half and then in half again.
  2. Place the lace-shaping template in the folded corner of the freezer paper and trace.
  3. Cut out the shape leaving the paper folded.

  4. Fold the 15" square Linen fabric in half and then in half again. Finger press.
  5. Unfold the fabric and the template. Center the template on the fabric, shiny side down, matching the crease lines. Iron in place.
  6. With a water-soluble marker trace around the outer edge.
  7. Set aside.

Creating the Fil Tire/Embroidery Design

  1. Open Digitizer 10000 EasyDesign
  2. Click on Setup. Click Work Environment. Select Hoop B. Click OK.
  3. Click on Embroidery. Click Embroidery Gallery. Select Motif 28.
  4. Left click until the Motif is eleven (11) grids across. Press the escape key on your computer's keyboard.
  5. Click on Edit. Click Select All.
  6. Click on Edit. Click Group.
  7. Click on the Rotate Icon twice.
  8. While highlighted (selected) move the motifs to the left side of the hoop area.
    Hint: Press "B" on your computer's keyboard and draw a rectangle around the top of the design to enlarge the viewing area. Placement of each grouped Motif will be easy to see.
  9. Click on the Copy icon. Click on the Paste icon. Place the second grouped Motif next to the first.
  10. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to group the two (2) rows of the Motif.
  11. Copy and paste nine (9) more times.
  12. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to group all of the motifs. Click anywhere on the screen to deactivate the Motifs.
  13. Click on the Current Color icon. From the thread color chart, select any thread color other than red.
  14. Click on the Object Details icon. Click on the Appliquè tab. Set the width to 0.10. Set the Inside to 50%; the Outside will automatically set to 50%.
  15. Click on the Appliquè icon. Right click at the top edge of the Motifs. Right click at right center of the Motifs. Right click at the bottom edge of the Motifs. Press Enter on your computer's keyboard to complete the oval.
  16. Press Enter on the keyboard once again.

  17. Click on the Select icon to highlight the red oval.
  18. Click on Edit. Click on Lock. This will prevent the oval from shifting out of position.
  19. Click on the Select icon. Click on the Motif design to highlight.
  20. Click on Edit. Click on Ungroup.
  21. Use the Polygon Select icon to delete the larger areas of the Motif from the outer edge of the oval. Remove the remaining Motif's by left clicking the mouse on the Motif and pressing the delete key on your computer's keyboard.


Built-in Embroidery Design #22

  1. Insert an ATA PC Card into the Memory Craft 10001.
  2. Press the Embroidery Mode.
  3. Select Design #22 from the Built-in Embroidery library
  4. Press the Edit tab. Design #22 will appear on the Edit screen.
  5. Press the Save File key. Save the design to the ATA PC Card using the name #22.
    Note: For Memory Craft 9500 and 300E owners select desired design from the Memory Craft's built-in library or from an optional PC Design Card or Memory Card.
  6. Remove the ATA PC Card from the Memory Craft and insert it into your computer.


Adding Design #22 to Fil Tire:

  1. Digitizer 10000 EasyDesign with Fil Tire design should still be open.
  2. Click on Embroidery. Click on Insert Design.
  3. Change the Files of Type to *.JEF. Change the Look in to Removable Disk Drive. Locate design #22 and open. The design will appear, highlighted, on the Digitizer screen with the Fil Tire motifs.
  4. Click on Edit. Click on Group.
  5. Click on the Object Details icon. Click on the Dimensions tab. Set the Width and Height to 80%. Click on OK.
  6. Click and drag design #22 over the right edge of the oval.
  7. Click on the Copy icon. Click on the Paste icon. Click on the Flip Along Vertical icon. Click and drag the flower design on the left side of the oval.
  8. Save the layout to a desired location in your computer.
  9. Send the completed layout to the Memory Craft 10001 via USB or RS232C cable. Or save the layout to an "Emb" folder on an ATA PC Card using the name "Fil Tire".

Professional Style Embroidery

  1. Set up the Memory Craft for Professional Style embroidery.
  2. Place an 8" x 11" piece of water soluble stabilizer on the bottom, in the center of the linen fabric. Place the outer portion of Embroidery Hoop B on the Clothsetter. Lay the linen fabric on the hoop. Line up the horizontal and vertical crease lines on the fabric with the crosshairs on the Clothsetter. Insert the inner portion of the hoop.
  3. Place the embroidery hoop on the carriage of the Memory Craft.
  4. Press the Embroidery Mode key.
  5. Press the Open Folder key. Select the design.
  6. Insert a #16 Wing needle. Place Janome Embroidery thread #253 (Ivory White) in the needle and Janome Bobbin thread in the bobbin. Embroider the first segment, which is the Fil Tire oval.
  7. Remove the Wing needle, insert the Blue Tip needle. Continue to sew the embroidery to complete the design.
    Note: The second segment of the embroidery is also sewn with #253 (Ivory White) Janome Embroidery thread. Always clip threads between colors, as they are often hard to get to when the embroidery is complete.
  8. Remove the embroidery from the hoop. Cut away most of the stabilizer. Water will remove the rest of the stabilizer.

Lace Shaping

  1. Set up the Memory Craft for Ordinary Sewing. Snap on the Satin Stitch Foot F. Select straight stitch #1. Adjust the stitch length to 1.8. Place Janome Embroidery Thread #253 (Ivory White) in the needle and Janome Bobbin thread in the bobbin.
  2. Place the pillow top on a lace shaping board, right side up. Using glass head pins, pin the top of the lace insertion to the drawn line around the embroidered center. Miter the lace where needed.
  3. Straight stitch on both sides of the Insertion Lace.
  4. Remove the Blue Tip needle and insert the Wing needle.
  5. Select stitch #84 (Applique). (MC9500 Stitch #40). Press the Adjust key. Decrease the stitch width to 2.0. Stitch length will remain at 2.5.
  6. Sew both sides of the lace with the right swing of the needle sewing into the linen and the left swing of the needle sewing into the lace.
  7. Using blunt-nose scissors, trim the fabric from behind the Insertion Lace.
  8. Wash out remaining stabilizer and markings on the pillow top.


Ruching

  1. Place the oval template over the embroidery. Using a water soluble marker, trace the oval for Ruching placement.
  2. Remove the Wing needle and insert a Blue Tip needle.
  3. Select stitch #157 (Decorative). (MC9500 Stitch #75). Place Janome Embroidery thread #216 (Pale Sky) in the needle and Janome Bobbin thread in the bobbin. Place a strip of water soluble stabilizer on the wrong side of the ribbon. Sew down the center of the ribbon. Gently remove the water soluble stabilizer.
  4. Using a water-soluble marker, place a small dot along one side of the ribbon; one inch apart.

  5. On the opposite side of the ribbon place marks one inch apart, staggering the marks between the dots already created.

  6. Fill a bobbin with a heavier thread, such as quilting thread. Insert into the bobbin holder. Place Ecru all-purpose sewing thread in the needle.
  7. Press the Adjust key. Increase the stitch length to 3.00. Sew from dot to dot across the ribbon.

  8. Gather the ribbon, gently pulling the bobbin thread.
  9. Pin the ruched ribbon on the traced oval. Tuck under the raw edges at each end of the ruching. Using Janome Embroidery thread #253 (Ivory White), straight stitch down the center of the ruching to secure to the pillow top.


Finishing the Pillow

  1. Gently, pull the header threads in the Edging Lace to gather.
  2. Pin the lace 1/2" in from the outside edge on the pillow front distributing the lace evenly as you pin.
  3. Remove the bobbin with the heavy thread and replace with all purpose sewing thread.
  4. Using a straight stitch, stitch length 2.2, stitch in place.
  5. On the 15" side of the 10" x 15" pillow back pieces, press under 1/4".
  6. Fold under again 1" and press.
  7. Press the Sewing Application key on the Memory Craft's Visual Display Screen. Select Blind Hem. Adjust the stitch width to 0.1. Blind hem stitch the hems in place.
    Hint: Now is the time to check if the backing pieces need to be trimmed. The pillow front may have drawn in from sewing the embroidery. Overlap the two backing pieces (hemmed ends) approximately 2 1/2". Compare to the pillow top and trim excess backing fabric if necessary.
  8. For center buttonhole placement, fold one backing piece in half. Mark with a water soluble pen.
  9. Measure in 2" from each end and mark for buttonholes two and three.
  10. Select buttonhole stitch #17. (MC9500 Buttonhole stitch #13) Place button in rear of buttonhole foot, close the slider tightly against the button. Sew the three buttonholes vertically.
    Hint: Place the button on the mark created in step 4 and 5. Draw a line at the bottom of the button. This will mark the starting point for sewing and the buttonhole will be centered in the marked area. The buttonholes sew from the front to the back. When sewing the buttonhole on one end, remember to turn the fabric around to sew on the other end.


Attaching Buttons

  1. Carefully, cut open the buttonholes.
  2. Lay the backing piece, without the buttonholes, on a flat surface, right side up. Place the backing piece; with buttonholes, on top of the other backing piece matching the hemmed edges. Mark sewing position for the three buttons.
  3. Press the Sewing Application key on the Visual Display Screen of the Memory Craft. Select Button. The feed dogs will automatically be lowered.
    Note: Depending on the hole width of the selected button, the button width may need to be adjusted.
  4. Sew on the buttons.
  5. Button the back pieces together.
  6. Lay the pillow front; face (right side) up, with lace ruffle folded in.
  7. Lay the buttoned back, face down (right side down), on pillow top. Pin in place.
  8. Select straight stitch #1. Sew with the pillow top side up following the stitches from the gathered lace.
  9. Insert the pillow form.
