Level: Beginner - Intermediate
This fast and fun project for your serger takes less than 5 minutes to sew out. You could make Valentine bookmarks for your child’s entire class in just a couple of hours! Or give one as a loving keepsake to anyone who enjoys snuggling up with a good book. The ribbons are for marking favorite parts of a book.
Janome Supplies Required
- Any Janome serger
- Serger needles size 11
- 1 spool Janome Overlock thread J360052 (red)
- All purpose foot
Fabric and Notions Required
- Plastic canvas – cut 1 ½” x 6 ¼”
- Rotary cutter
- Valentine print fabric – cut 1 strip 8” x 6”
- 2 spools of red metallic decorative serger thread or 2 spools of red Robison Anton decorative serger floss
- ¼” Ribbon – cut 4 pieces 20” long (2 red, 2 white)
- Seam sealant
- Glue stick
Instructions
Set up your serger for a 3 thread wide overlock stitch with red serger thread in the needle and the red metallic decorative serger thread in the two loopers. Use 5/8” seam allowance.
- With wrong sides together fold fabric in half to measure 8” x 3” and press with an iron.
- With wrong sides together, sew both long sides and one short side.
- Insert plastic. Be careful that you are at least 1” away from the raw edge. If you catch the plastic in the serger seam, you will break the needle.
- Using your gluestick, arrange and adhere the 4 pieces of ribbon at the raw edge. (The ribbon should be hanging down past the previously sewn short edge).
- Sew across the raw edge, make sure you catch the ribbons but do not sew on the plastic.
- Dab all thread tails with seam sealant. You may hide the thread tails or clip when dry.
