Lesson 11 - Adding a Satin Stitch Border Outline Manually
Many graphic images do not have outlines, so outlines are not created automatically along with the embroidery. We can add outlines after a design is created.
For this exercise, we will add an outline of satin border stitches. To demonstrate how this is done, we will use the Yacht bitmap in the Embroidery Album.

The Open dialog box appears.
Click Yacht once to see the image in the Preview pane. Click Open to bring it to the design screen.

Click the Image Preparation icon.

Click OK on the Image Preparation dialog box.
Click the Click-to-Design icon.

The Click-to-Design dialog box will appear.

Click Auto Select under Fills. Omit white under colors. Click OK.
We will use satin border stitches as the outline except where we have to sew twice over an area. In those areas, we will switch to single run stitch.
Click the Border icon.

Click the Object Details icon.

Click the Line Stitch tab.
Click Satin Line to set the border stitch. Change the Stitch Width to .06 to decrease the size of the border width.

Since we decreased the width of the border, we need to change the underlay from the default of zigzag to center run.
Click the Underlay tab.
Click the down arrow in the Stitch Type box. Click Center Run.

Click OK.
Most outlines are black, so set the thread color.
Click the Thread icon.

Click #002, Black. Magnify the design screen. There is no correct way to add an outline. The suggestions we show here are only to show you technique. Every digitizer creates embroidery differently from every other one.
The most important consideration when digitizing outlines is that they flow without breaks and minimize jump stitches.
We're going to start with the lavender sail. Click the beginning point at the top of the sail. Continue to click points around the mast side of the sail, the bottom, and the left side until you get back to the top. Press Enter to generate the stitches.

Click points along the underside of the red top flag until you meet the yellow sun. Press Enter.

To outline the edge of the sun between the red flag and the lavender sail, we need to "walk" down the sun using a run line, then come back up to the red flag with our border stitch. Click Object Details. Click Run Line. Click OK.

Click points along the sun from the bottom of the red flag to the lavender flag. Press Enter.

Click the Border icon.
Click points along the sun from the lavender sail to the red flag. (Note that when you click the Border icon, the object details return to the satin line setting.) Press Enter.

Click points along the red flag until it meets the sun, overlapping the previous flag border to create a continuous satin stitch. Press Enter.

Click the Run Line icon.
Click points along the top of the red flag to the mast. Press Enter.

Click the Border icon.
Click points back to the flag border, overlapping the last point. Press Enter.

Click points around the sun until it meets the red sail. Press Enter.

Click the Run Line icon.
Click points along the red sail from the sun up to the top. Press Enter.

Click the Border icon. Click OK.
Click points from the top of the red sail until you get to the bottom.

Click the Run Line icon.
Click points along the bottom of the red sail up to the top and back again. Press Enter.

Click the Border icon.
Click points back to the red sail border.

At this point, we are going to use our artistic discretion to not outline every part of the design. Adding a border will not serve any purpose along the black spar point at the front of the boat, nor between the black and red parts of the boat, nor along the black front band. In fact, there is also no point to outline the mast. Border stitch outlines are thick and will detract from the detail of the boat.
Instead, we will digitize the water and the top of the boat. Going from the edge of the red sail to the top of the boat will cause a jump stitch that will have to be trimmed, but that will be the only one in the border.
Click points along the red top of the boat until you reach the water. Press Enter.

Click points around the water, ending where you began. Press Enter.

The outline is done!
