 Vermont Quilt Festival

11 July, 2014

The Vermont Quilt Festival took place on June 27th-29th at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, Vermont. Vermont Quilt Festival was established in 1977 to promote New England's best quilts and quilt makers.

To encourage young people to get into the art of quilting, the Vermont Quilt Festival accepts entries in the Youth quilt category. At the Quilt Festival in 2009, Dave LaValley of Bittersweet Fabrics, surprised everyone when he gave away a MyStyle 100 to all 5 kids that entered a quilt. In the following years, the Festival has seen steady growth in the youth category and Dave gives away machines to each entry. This year, 36 quilts were entered by kids ranging from 4-16. All 36 youth quilters received a Janome MyStyle 100 in recognition of their work and to help them continue their journey.

Dave is proud to give away these machines, “I wanted to do something special for these young quilters. The Janome MyStyle100 is a real sewing machine. I tell them that they no longer have to sew on their mom’s machine, because they have one of their very own now.”

As a special treat, this year Dave LaValley was presented with a quilt that was made by a young quilter thanking Dave for giving her a machine a few years back. She wanted to publically thank Dave for all that he has done for her and for the community.

Dave on how it felt to be surprised with the gift, “I was shocked, I am usually the one that gets to reveal the prize. It was fun to have the tables turned.”

Congratulations to Christine Wickert from Penfield NY, for winning the Best in Show Award sponsored by Janome America, for her quilt, “My Version of a Persian”. Christine’s quilt was one of 300+ quilts that were submitted and judged at the event.

Another big congratulations goes to Millie Becker from Danvers, Massachusetts, who won the raffle for an 8900 sponsored by both Janome America and Bittersweet Fabrics.

Dave’s parents, Donald and Audrey started Bittersweet Fabrics in 1968 and began selling Janome (New Home) in 1981. Dave took over the business in 1998 and is proud to be one of the Top Janome Dealers in Country for the last 15 years. Dave believes that the most important part of the business is service. People come from as far as western New York State for service because they know that Dave and his staff will treat them right. Visit their website at: http://www.bittersweetfabrics.com
