New owner of JAnome 7700 and liking machine a lot. When piecing, I am using the thread cutting feature...eliminates long tails of thread which I have to trim later but...bobbin thread folds under the piece as I begin sewing next piece creating thread lumps and extra bulk which I do not like.
Is there anyway to eliminate this?

thanks.

if you are strip piecing and doing one right after the oth it is like beginning a new piece of fabric each time. When I first start to sew I use a small piece of fabric to sew off of and I do not use my thread cutter between each piece. I know you like the thread cutting between each piece but there really is no way to eliminate unless you pull up your thread before each piece and that will take more time then cutting in between after you sew without the thread cutter.

Ok thanks. I was piecing small pieces but pattern was complex and required sewing 1 piece on then removing it from machine to turn it to add next then removing it to make sure outer strip was sewn on correctly etc...it's one of those interlocking patterns.
I guess the 'laying back' and overstiching of the bobbin thread is how this machine works.....so now I will approach the task differently.

thanks!

I have been using the thread cutter as I quilt but what a mess on the back of my quilt! I have to take it all out! Is there no way to use the cutter and machine quilt too?

You need to have the bobbin thread on top or use a startie/stoppie and sew on it then continue onto your good work. I have never owned a machine that didn't do the thread nest if I didn't do that. I used to just live with the nests or pick them out after I was finished. I didn't take the time to make sure the threads were behind my sewing or hold them for a stitch or two - I'm impatient. Oh and I've owns a lot of machine since I started sewing and there were other brands in the mix. Those were over 25 years ago, but I sewed on about 6 different brands of machines (not all mine).

So how do you then make sure your work does not all unravel if you can't knot it? I have a lot of unpicking to do but I thot I would then have to hand stitch again over the ends to secure them in but not sure. Is a startie stopppie just a piece of scap fabric? Thanks for your help!

Sorry, I meant to explain the startie/stoppie. It is a small piece of fabric or 2 is even better - sandwiched. You sew on it and then sew off but have your next piece of fabric ready to go into the machine. It is just the start or end of a strip that you sew. Some call them leaders - there are many descriptions for this particular method of strip piecing. It won't help much in your machine quilting though as you have your quilt in the machine and you don't want to add another layer and you'd still have the knots.

I haven't done much free motion but I know that my embroidery will have tons of knots on the back with every thread change. It isn't fun to fix, but it can be done picking them out carefully.
