I just got this machine last month. I am having a bit of a problem with the hoops. I am trying to do a quilting pattern (from the quilting section) one that is built in to the machine.

I cannot for the life of me get the embroidery hoop to take the quilt which is a small one about 45 inches square. I have changed the batting to something thinner (warm and natural) from a slightly more puffy one.

That didn't help at all. I simply cannot get the quilt to stay in the hoop. No matter what I do. I had NO problem with this when I had the Janome 11000. I quilted many many quilts using the embroidery hoops that came with the machine.

Now, all of a sudden, with the new machine, I am totally flummoxed. Surely someone has some help for me .. PLEASE. I have spoken to the dealer several times but he hasn't had too much experience himself with this machine so can't offer any solutions.

I think maybe the fact we do not have clothsetter may be part of the problem. Try loosening up the screw a little. I am hoping they come out with the great hoop we had for the quilt program in our 11,000.

Have you tried hooping tear-away stabilizer, spraying it with adhesive and then smoothing your quilt onto this? It should hold everything inplace and you can just tear it off when finished?

I don't quilt so feel free to totally ignore this post if it makes no sense at all.

I'm not sure what happened to my message in response to MOM .. here it is again.

I have loosened the screw .. I don't think a clothsetter would help at all. The problem is that the hoop itself is too THIN to accept the quilt sandwich without popping out. Since the hoop is so large (this one takes the place of the 5X7 hoop on the 11000) it doesn't hold the whole thing LEVEL, as soon as it touches ANYTHING, it pops out. This is unnerving to say the least. And since I've already changed the batting to a thinner one, that won't help either.

Oh for the smaller hoop of the 11000 that I could do a small quilt in an afternoon. Now I'm into my fourth day on this one.

I thought of using the adhesive sticky stuff on the underside, and since it is the top of the hoop that pops off, it might just work. I'll give it a try and report back.

gingerella:

No doubt you are right the hoops are thinner. The quilt is probably too heavy as well. Hopefully they will come out with a magnetic hoop like we had with the 11,000SE version 3.0.

I am not sure if you have the new MBX software, but if you do when we open our list of hoops there is a quilting hoop listed. can we hope.

Well, as I said I did change out the batting. I called the dealer again and he agreed that I should have hoops which were not bent out of shape. He would fix whatever he could. He also mentioned that "there would be new hoops now and again" when I asked about the Accufill item.

But the good news is this: I finally did get the quilt done using the oval shaped hoop (i had tried this one earlier and couldn't...) I got it out again and worked out the problems. It just takes some getting used to I think. I do feel the hoop itself is not the best though. I will work on the two two-inch borders tomorrow. I do like the looks of one of the designs - it is the heart one which is under the embroidery designs.

Sorry, I don't know what MBX software is. If it will help me learn this machine, I'd sure like to know.

By the way, I really appreciate everyone's help on this.

I got 4 small magnets with my MC12000 and I think they work using the hoop in the machine with the magnets going over the whole thing but I have to admit that I haven't looked that closely at the 2 large hoops. The thing that I would like to see is those nice hard plastic covers for pressing the fabric into the hoop - I thought they worked great in the acuhoops for the 11000SE. I will have to look into this hooping stuff tomorrow when I'm more refreshed.

Cheryl:

the magnets are so small with our new hoops that I don't think they will hold 3 layers of quilt. I wish they had the magnetic style hoops we had with the 11,000.

At the $$ price we paid we should not have to be paying for an upgrade for the machine to add a new hoop.

OH MOM - you are SO right. They should give us upgrades for years to come.

These hoops that have been included in the 12000 package are really not useful at all. I don't think I'll be using them any time soon, at least not for quilting. I'll use them since I will HAVE to, for embroidery projects for Christmas - which means nothing too elaborate. The small oval one should do for a 6" quilt block at least, for a while.

Mom,

Do the old magnets work? or did you trade them in when you got your new machine. I noticed that we didn't get a double up of the magnets this time round. We might need to ask for larger magnets if the small do not work. They wouldn't be that pricey but I do agree that we have already laid down a large chunk of change for these machines.

I turned everything in Cheryl.

I paid cash outright for the machine and he gave me credit for the 11,000 machine only toward the new machine.

All my extras he is giving me store credit so that if new accessories come in for the new machine I will not have to pay for them. good deal huh?

I think the old magnets are too wide. Look at your magnetic hoops, they are much thicker and only 1 bottom hoop not bottom and top.

Also the insert to the Magnetic Hoops is much heavier than the template insert for our new hoops. Actually Cheryl I was surprised how well my large GR Hoop hooped my batting and fabric.

Mom,

After I wrote that, I remembered that you turned everything in. I have to say I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get those heave plastic inserts as we didn't get a cloth setter. It certainly would make the part of placement a bit easier. I do believe that with a bigger hooping quilts, etc. easier as there is more space to work thing in.

After reading MOM and CherylAnn's notes, I went back up and checked on what I received with my new 12000. Sure enough, there are four magnets and I remember thinking when I unpacked them they were in there by mistake. I guess they're not there by mistake.

I will give them a try ASAP but I still believe the larger hoop is too flimsy to take a quilt sandwich. We shall see.

Thanks, ladies. I really do appreciate your input and help

Hi -- I was thrilled to have the larger hoop. Now, not so much -- too flimsy! However, I think that I've gotten the magnets figured out. If you start the magnet from the outside, and roll across the frame to the inside -- it seems to grip better. Also, I put the magnets on one side (easier to make sure that everything is lined up, etc when just doing that one side), smooth out the quilt (top, bat, bottom), push the frame down HARD and snap those magnets on the other side (again, outside to inside). I kind of hold the frame to help keep it from drooping while stitching. BTW, I was using Warm & Natural batting.

It really helps to use the magnets included with the hoop. Hoop it on a level surface and make sure your magnets are snapped in.

The critical part is to use your extension table anytime you embroider with the larger hoops. It makes a big difference.

Get the bulk of your quilt up on the table and don't let it stress it out of the hoop.

The bigger the quilt, you may have to hold it up to keep some slack in it.

Please tell me how you can use the extention table to help when doing embroidery? Won't it get in the way of the quilting hoop when it is moving up down & sideways?

petula:

I have had the 11,000 and now the 12,000. Some say we can use the exptesion table but I never have been able to figure it out. If the arm bumps the extension table we may have more issues than we want to think about.

I find the new 12,000 Embroidery arm is 100 times stronger than any other Janome embroidery machine I have had in the past and I have had 3. The more I have worked with the hoops I find them quite strong, much stronger than I first thought and the magnets help keep the bottom and top hoop together.

You can do embroidery with the table on as it was designed for this purpose. The embroidery arm will not hit the table unless you don't have it in the correct position. When doing a large item, such as a quilt, prop it on a chair to take up the weight. I've done a very large wall hanging - it would fit a bed but be a bit short and it worked like a charm. I held the quilt for every design which was a built in. The most pain was hooping so many times and I wish that I'd turned off the thread cutter. Messy back but it is going to be a wall hanging in my son-in-law's music room.

Hi, Thanks for your help with this matter, I cant wait to try it. I'll let you know how it goes.
Another question does anyone know if Janome is going to bring out a clothsetter for the 12000 embroidery machine?
