I too have a Viking machine - I use it for most of my regular sewing. I wanted a knee lift and a slightly larger harp, so I just recently purchased the Janome MC6300. I LOVE this machine, and it does not disappoint. I have another Janome (8050) as well, and across the board they are fine machines at every price point. I didn't need the additional stitch package of the 6500 or the 6600 etc., because my Viking has loads of lovely stitches, but on the other hand I wanted a very sturdy machine for FMQ and one with a bit more than a straight stitch machine would have, so the 6300 is IDEAL! I find today's machines do not like heavy thread in the bobbins, so I use Masterpiece in the bobbin when I do FMQ. Otherwise, just some tension tweaking now and then and you are good to go on a Janome for FMQ! My lowly 8050 does lovely FMQ as well, which is what convinced me to buy the MC6300 for the other features I wanted, mainly a KNEE LIFT! HOW did I do without that all these years?!
