Hi Ya'll! I am new here and new to Janome! So excited I picked up my Janome MC9700!!! Where do I begin?
My goals are to take clip art or logos (i have several friends that have small businesses) and monogram shirts, bags, etc.

I have all the basic accessories that come with the machine. What else do I need? Any main tips for a beginner?

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated!

Hang on a bit while I use my super Jedi powers......

This is not the embroidery machine your looking for, you feel an overwhelming urge to send it to me (did it work?)

Embroidery can be very addictive, first plan of action is to source your local EA (Embroiders Anonomous) then follow all the instructions as in the previous reply!

You have just received some realistic and humourous advice. Here is some that is not so humourous. First check out this website (Emblibrary.com) for incredible designs at great prices, tutorials and generally all the info you need for machine embroidery.

Then decide if you want to do any digitizing yourself. If you do, there is a cost to purchase the software and a learning curve. There are others on this website who can give you expert help on this.

I purchase all my designs as I have no interest in digitizing and am lazy. There are many sites out there which offer designs and some are great. Be very careful of "free" designs. Some are fine but many are grim so always sew a sample before unleashing it on an unsuspecting project.

Once you decide where your interest lies and it might be a combination of purchasing and digitizing, let us know and we will guide you through. Be as specific as possible in your questions and there are no silly questions. I know as I am sure I have asked most of them along the way.

Ok, Jacquie has figuratively slapped my wrist, albeit gently, but my little list is based on experience believe you me.
Digitising requires knowledge of whichever software you purchase, ( I use to use several but now mainly just 2, Janome's MBX and Embird plus Studio) It takes time to get to know your software.

Then you really have got to learn your machine's preferences, I have the MC10000 upgraded to V3. My machine hates default densities, is prone to sulk if I use a thread it doesn't like, stitches better on a medium speed.

Then you have to learn about fabric behaviour when stitches are applied to it. It's not a case of oh its fabric doing a fair number of stitches all packed into 3 inch circle wont distort my fabric, it will.

Then you have to learn about stabilisers, not take someone else's word for it, and how do you do that? well you have to spend time making mistakes, trying again, experimenting, test stitching, analysing the results, listening to your machine, monitoring your machine as it stitches out your first tentative efforts at digitising. How long does it take? How long is a piece of string.

The more time and effort you put in, the more willing you are learn from mistakes, the more you are prepared to do the dull routine exercises, the more quickly you will arrive at your goal.

I would never slap your wrist, or any other part of your anatomy. You are far too valuable to us. Glad to see that you are giving her digitizing advice and now she has a little basic info. on both sides of the coin, Fletcher can check out the various possibilities and start having fun.

Welcome monogrammichelle! As others have said, you will need software and know-how to digitize your own designs. I'm not an expert but, from my very limited reading on the subject, some design programs will easily digitize clip art. However, that is something that I have absolutely no interest in doing. Emblibrary has has more designs than I can do in my lifetime, lol.

If you do want to learn to digitize original designs, check out your dealer or other local shops, as they may offer classes. I deal with two local dealers as I own Janome and Baby Lock machines. I do know my Baby Lock dealer has offered to digitize designs for me, although I don't know the cost. However, if it's something you are not interested in doing yourself, and you don't have too many complicated designs, it may be cheaper than buying the software. Let us know what you decide to do.
