I am in a new class that has you make the quilt top and put together the sandwich and then quilt with the embroidery. It is not that large, but evidently large enough that it won't stay hooped. I have tried everything, including hooping the stabilizer and adhesive. Too heavy. Janome must have some way to keep the hoop together. Any ideas?

memline you are not telling us what machine you have. Each machine has it own hoops. If you let us know then perhaps we can give you a hint what to do.

If your quilt is to thick you could hoop your bottom fabric and then put the quilt on top, but you will need to baste it so that it all stays together while you do the embroidery. If you have a MC11000 SE you should have the acuhoops and the MC12000 has large hoops that you put little magnets on to hold the sandwich together. If you have a 350e, MC10000, 9700, 300e or one I may not have mentioned, that will be a little trickier but you should be able to do it. Loosen the hoop as much as you can and put the quilt on, tighten, attach and sew. You do need to be careful so that everything stays together. It takes a little patience and practice.

I haven't had problems, but I use warm and natural, warm and white, battilizer (a combination of stabilizer and batting and not to heavy). If you are trying to use the thick batting, you will have problems with any kind of hooping - it is just to thick.

I have a memory craft 11000. The one thing I don't like is the hoop attachment. The quilt I am trying to do has a thin 100% cotton batting (good stuff but I forget the brand). The embroidery is the same on the back as on the front and very dense. I have loosened the tension to !. Also, since it is the same, you have to change the bobbin color fairly often, hence the problem. The hoop lets loose while I am trying to change the bobbin color. AAAARRRGh.... Oh well, I think I have to think a bit, but I was hoping someone would have had this problem before and save me a step.

The 11,000 regular hoops are a little more difficult to hold a thicker fabric sandwich. The 11,000 has available quilting hoops which were part of an upgrade to the 11,000Se Version 3.0. You may want to look into that upgrade. But for now just be sure the hoop is tight enough around the fabric. Before I did my upgrade I made a queen size hoop quilt and had some difficulty hooping but I found once I got the feel of it it worked fine. Perhaps looking into the upgrade may help. If you are using a purchased design the design may be too dense. If you are using a built in design take your quilt block to your dealer and show him your issue with the underneath thread he may have a suggestion for you.

I think part of your problem is the amount of times you are taking your hoop on and off. Is it possible to find a bobbin colour that would work without changing with each colour? Perhaps a variegated bobbin. I have done HoopSisters, but that is square by square quilt as you go, so things aren't big and heavy. I just made a decision to use the same colour on the bottom, rather than changing. It was easier to keep track of what I needed to do as well.

Also, try to stay away from dense embroidery, as it will pack your quilt down.

Thanks guys. I think I need to check out the updated stuff. This is very frustrating and I can see with the new techniques and embroidery designs coming out, such as my bottom same as top designs, I will need a more stable hooping option. Also, the design is too dense for what it is supposed to be. This project just may end up in the wastebin. Sigh, not really, but I may change some things to get "something else" out of it.

Do you have the magnetic hoops? I find they hold much better on a quilt sandwich than the regular hoop does.
