Hi Everyone,

I just received my Janome FM725 needle felting maching yesterday. I had the 5 needle unit in place and was felting and I broke 3 of the 5 needles in the unit. I had a replacement so that made me happy.

My question is...can you replace the 3 broken needles in the unit or is the whole unit no good now?

I would appreciate any advice! Also any websites about needle felting that you want to share is also helpful.

Thanks,
Debbie

Congratulations on your new toy. I have had my felting machine for a couple of years. When initially learning I broke several needles as I found myself moving the materials too fast under the needle unit. Shortly after I purchased my machine, Janome came out with a needle unit that allows individual needles(punching) to be inserted into a needle unit "holder". If you go to the machine section of the Janome website, click on the 725 and go to accessories, the needle units should be listed there. Also, most dealers will carry the needle units, look for the replaceable ones. I keep serveral individual needles on hand to replace broken ones. As you get the hang of the movement of the materal and needle you will find the breakage to be less. My best advise to myself was to go slow, for a good result. Best of luck, Debbie, Jeane

Debbie....I was still thinking about the needle breakage and remembered that the number one way to prevent the breakage is to be certain the machine has STOPPED before trying to move the materail when you are pausing, this should help....also I did look up the needle unit...you may want to get the "Changeable Needle Unit" with five extra needles (barbs). Let us know if this resolves your issues. Jeane

Hi Jeane, I have a 725 as well and would like some feedback from those of us who have the machine as to the projects we all are making. I have done the silk scarves--but nothing else. I think most who post on this thread do not know what machine felting is. What have you been making?? My niece lives in Coarsegold as she does some beautiful painting on glassware.

Hi Linda, I would love to meet your niece and see her work. I also do oil paintings besides my sewing. We have lived here just a year and love the area, having moved from Lake Havasu City, AZ.
I am still setting up my sewing room and my felting machine is still in it's box from the move. I have quite a collection of roving, wool fabrics, and have ambitions to do custom carryalls with denim and roving on an embroidery field, mixing the two disicplines, and adding bead embellishments (lots of bling). Just an idea right now. I am currently learning digitizing for my 11000 se. Best Regards, Jeane

What a great idea to combine the embroidery with the felting. I have felted on denim and it seems to work well. I have been working on different patterns but cannot seem to make it all come together like I want. So an embroidery outline with felting inside may just be the trick I need. I am going to give it a try. I live in Santa Cruz and my niece and I will be at the Harvest Quilt & Fiber Arts Show at "The Taste of Morgan Hill" in Morgan Hill on Sept 24-25th. That is pretty close to where you live--maybe you could come?

Needle felting is my passion!!! I rarely do that primitive stuff though. I mostly needle felt silk and embroider on it afterwards. A REAL classy look.

Am curious what you make with the silk. Also do you felt the silk first--then embroidery on the felted silk. How does that work??

Yes I'm curious, also about the silk & embroidery. Would love some new ideas. I did a wallhanging with needle felting & embroidered butterflies & flowers. It was originally done in a Janome digest by Maddie Bushman (I think!) it was a great learning experience & the felting sure added to the embroidery. I have also taken some hand felted patterns & mixed felting by hand (with needles) with machine felting. That works well also as a person can get more dimension with some hand work. It would be nice to get some more ideas on the Janome websites for projects.

I took a class on machine needle felting 2 years ago. The lady teaching the class advised that for the most precise felting to use the one needle unit. Amazing what my friend and I managed to do with just that one needle. The 5 needle unit will really pound the roving into the fabric and would be good for large areas. I haven't done any felting since then but have good intentions. Unfortunately, I'm not very imaginative so need encouragement from others to sometimes get to task.

Would love to see some of your work on silk with felting and embroidery. Do you have any pics on line to look at? Thanks

There is a blouse on Janome's website called Silk elegance that is tone on tone felting and embroidery. Also recently there is an article featured in Vogue Pattern Magazine (Dec/Jan issue) about it but you can see that on the Janome home page from last week as well. Also months ago there was a dark green jacket with needle felting featured on the home page of Janome, too.
