Hi there: I am new to the forum. I just joined a quilting club in my area and they all are experienced quilters. I am the newby. They have loaned me a very basic Janome and I really like it, but I have to give it back. I want one for Christmas and will love to know where to start when I go to the dealer. I also want one that is not heavy because all the ladies in the group bring their machines in to the clubhouse once a month to work on projects. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It is not necessary to post the same message in multiple categories. All it does it scatter the info. you are seeking. We read all the posts, no matter which category so you only have to post it once for it to be read.

Welcome Jstelth! Don't worry about the multiple posts- If you are new to online forums there are some guidelines out there in the cyber world but don't worry about that now...

There is so much to learning about sewing machines so I can start with some basics to get you started. If you think that you have really caught the quilting bug and want to make a commitment to a machine purchase. I recommend that you get a machine that is not so basic that it has limited functions but one that you can grow into as you gain more skill. The 2160 Decor or 3160 Quilters Decor machines are great machines and portability enough for you to take to classes. It has drop feed which is important to free motion quilting, Needle up/down, Start/'top and Speed Control... the 3160 has scissors!! and a 1/4"O foot. There are many reasons the listed features make these great machines, but the features I've listed are a quilter's "must have".

jstelth,
I have sewn on both machines that Warbler mentioned. I like the 3160 best. Either machine would be good to start with. If your quilting bug turns into a "habit" then you could keep the smaller machine to take to your monthly meetings and upgrade to a larger machine such as the Horizon 7700 to sew on at home. I also agree not to start with such a basic machine that you will outgrow it very quickly.

Good luck. You're going to have so much fun! (After you get past the learning frustrations.)

Hi, I'm also new. I have a 350E and I love it. Some day hope to advance to better machine, but at this time. I'm very satisfied with the 350E, good luck

Check with your local quilt store or fabric store for a quilt guild. My local guild meets once a month as a large group but there is both a day and an evening group that meets twice a month to sit and sew. We also try to have an all day sew once a quarter. The ladies in my guild are more than happy to share their knowledge. Your quilt store may also offer beginner lessons. One word of caution...there is more than one way to do many of the quilting techniques. Some individuals will not sew until their material is washed, others never wash their material before sewing. Some always pin before sewing, some never pin. Listen carefully to what everyone tells you. Then you decide which technique works best for you. You may find that one technique works best for this quilt but another technique works better for the next design. And then the next quilt, you might use a combination of the techniques. You can never have enough techniques!

I have a Janome 880 which was made for Sears many years ago, love this little cheapy oldie and do all my quilt puiecing on this. Did have the 350 Embroidery machine and loved it. Now I have the 11000SE. Not very compatiable with the newer computers. Use it often for quilting with built in stitches.I don't love it.

Why do you say the 11,000SE is not compatible with the new computers? You can use a USB or an ATA card or a direct connect. I had the 11,000SE for 3 years and loved loved it. If I could have afforded it I would have kept my 11,000SE along with my 12,000. I loved the hoops, the quilt program and it was a work horse. I loved that we could wind the bobbin while the machine was embroiderying. I just canot understand what you do not like. Let us know.

Ouch., that was a bit harsh. This was not meant to be a scolding. I always read all posts no matter which category but if a post is in the correct category it is easier to spot and reply helpfully and if ever anyone wants to scan for information, it is easier to find if in the appropriate category. This also applies to those members who put the same question in several categories. This is even more confusing as different members will reply to the different categories and the thread becomes hard to follow.

Your chastisement is a little premature as you will find that I and other forum members do our best to help and inform others not matter what the question and where it is posted. We are here to help each other and I like to think we are successful. Personal attacks are never helpful.

I just purchased a Janome 2160QDC on ebay.ca for $405.00 includes shipping! There was 5 used for demos in ontario Trade Show. Seller says they were just taken out of box for display, never actually used. As I'm new to sewing and like many overwhelmed with the choices out there. After surfing the internet I came across the ad on Ebay. Hoping I scored a really good deal as I think I did. It also included quilting arm, some accessories and hard cover. Any opinions or advice on this model?

I own a 3160QDC and love it. It's quite portable, relatively inexpensive, and a good quilting starter machine.

I own a Janome MC11000 ver 2.0 which I was able to finally get to communicate with my new laptop with the assistance of several posts and upgrading the driver on the PC to go with the newest version of Windows.

Now I am wondering if it is worthwhile to upgrade my sewing machine to version 3.0. I downloaded the software from the Janome site (2 steps), and have been reviewing the instructions; but I haven't done anything yet. I don't want to mess up my machine.

Is the upgrade worth it? I would say that my emotion right now is HESITANT to mess with a good thing.

Thanks for any input you can provide.
