Hi everyone,

I just purchased my first serger (having tamed my sewing machine), and I'm having problems with the basics already. Threading, believe it or not, isn't the problem...

When I run material, like calico or basic cotton, through the serger, it gathers the material and I have to pull the ends/sides of the material to 'straighten' the seam. Also, there is at least a 1mm gap between the thread and the end of the material...

I've tried playing around with the tension discs, re-threaded the machine twice, changed the stitch length and differential feed - all to no avail. It still puckers up the calico as I feed it through.

My fear is that if this is what it does to basic calico...I'm scared to put anything more delicate (or expensive) through it until I work it out.

Any and all help gladly appreciated!

Have you read your manual? It sounds like the differential feed might be set so that it gathers instead of just sewing a fine serge.
