I'm new to serging. It's the "Bane of my existence". I have a Janome 8002D. If I use regular serger thread I can do a rolled hem. However, if I try "wooley serger thread no such luck. It will maybe make a short chain than gets tangled or just tangles up and makes a mess.

You need to reduce the tension most of the way to serge with wooly nylon.

I can get the wooley thread to work on the upper looper but not on the lower looper.

Renee,
You only need the wooly nylon on the upper looper. I never change my tensions to other than the recommended using the wooly nylon thread. The wooly nylon fills in the gaps and makes very nice seams on the appropriate fabrics. If you are using a woven fabric for the rolled hem wooly isn't necessary but it is very nice on knits.

Renee,
Another thing you might want to consider, is asking your dealer for a class on serging. I've taken several over the years as one tends to get into a rut and use the serger just for finishing seams and a class refreshes what you know or need to learn. I've had a serger for over 25 years and took classes in the 1980's , 90's and 2000's. I think another wouldn't hurt.
Also, go through your manual and do all the exercises. They aren't listed as exercises but do each thing. Make samples of knits, wovens and attach them to a sheet of paper, with the settings you've used and label them for future reference. You will find that a wealth of knowledge and learning. I wish I was there to do that with you.
Practice, Practice, Practice.

Try this-one needle - regular thread; wooly nylon in upper looper; light thread in lower looper with high tension. When threading make sure that the looper threads don't cross each other AND make sure that the needle thread hasn't travelled a single cycle which will cause the needle thread to wrap below the loopers which will continuously break threads.

Also, check your manual to see what the suggested settings are for rolled hemming.

I want to thank everyone for their help and it was very helpful! I also took another serger class. There were only three of us and we had more fun and laughter and kept instructor in stiches.

I don't understand how a serger can do a rolled hem. A rolled hem, which is usually done on silk scarves etc., is done by hand and invisible when executed properly. In my experience sergers wrap the raw edges with stitches. If there is a way to do a true rolled hem on one, I would love to know.
