Hi,
I have never used a computerized sewing machine, therefore I don't know where to start.
I'm looking to purchase a machine that can be used for sewing garmets, occasional small quilts, and decorative/embroidery/applique stitching. I don't want to start out with a machine that has a thousand features that I'll never use.
I've looked at several of Janome's machines and am clueless as to whitch one woudl be best for me. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks!!

I would start at a dealer. Try a few computerized machines, and see how you like them. Some people realize they only like mechanicals. Although, if you'd like to do decorative stitches, you'll probably want the computerized. As for many features you'll never use, try them out and see! I was sure some features on my machines were a waste, until I tried them. There are definitely some 'bells and whistles' worth having!

A great idea, sitting down with your dealer. Then, don't be rushed to decide right away. Maybe take some notes on the computerized features you see and give it some thought.
For instance, I never realized how much I was going to like having an auto thread cutter feature on my amchine, and now, I bring the big thing to class and leave my smaller machine at home.
If you plan to do a lot of buttons, zippers, then take a look at how those functions work.
Then, you can list the features, and prioritize based on your budget.
I'm curious to hear from others what features they just can't live without now that they have them, especially features they didn't realize were useful until having them!

You should also decide if you want the free arm. It is very convenient, especially for hemming pants or anything which is small in area.
Take a pile of different samples of fabric with you and test drive all of them. Leave the kids at home. You don't want any distractions.
Give your dealer your budget limits so that he can show you a variety of machines in your range. After you have made a decision, you can ask the forum members for comments. You will find this helpful.
Don't be afraid to buy a used machine. Customers often trade them in and if the dealer will give you a warranty, you may get a great deal on a machine.

A feature I never thought I'd like is the presser foot lifter that is now on the MC12000. I also like all that space - I put things there so they are handy to use. The price might be an over-kill for those little things, but I use the embroidery, and love the 9mm width for the decorative stitches. Now, if I didn't like embroidery, I could live with just my 7700 as it has that nice space too and the open arm (both have that and many other lesser priced models too). I also love the thread cutter. The little 4120 QDC is also a beauty. Actually, I don't own a machine that isn't a must in my sewing room, even if it is the treadle that I got from a high school friend, that will be just "pretty to look at", but it works.
