Hi, I bought a Janome Jem 760 and took it to a quilt retreat. No problems the first day. Just before lunch on day 2 I was sitting there ripping out some stitches. My feet were no where near the peddle. The machine slowly started sewing - needle going up & down all by itself. The only way to stop it was to turn it off. I left is turned off while we all went to eat. Came back, turned it on and was fine for an hour or so, then it started the "ghost sewing" again. I left it off overnight, and by 10a on day 3 it was doing it again. Luckily I had brought my Singer Genie and was able to use it for the rest of the retreat.
Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do to correct it? I live in a semi-rural area and the nearest dealer is quite a distance away.
Thanks,

I don't really have a solution, but I'm sure I've seen others with machines doing this and it was a fault with the foot pedal. Maybe something to check out...maybe a new pedal will solve it.

I think if you take the foot control and vacuum it out carefully, you may solve the problem. This happened to a friend with a 6600 and we just shook the foot control up and it seemed to work fine for the rest of that day. We haven't met to sew since so I'm not sure if the machine is working for her or not. However, you may be wise to take the little Jem in for a complete servicing when you have an opportunity. Make the appointment ahead of time so that they can slot you in and you might get the machine back one the same day you are in the dealer's city to shop.

My 6500 sews on it's own too. I pull the cord from the machine and it'll stop. The scary part is the speed changes as it sews. It's obviously a design flaw. My dealer is 400 miles away. I was thinking about buying a 7700 but I'd resent having it happen again. I would love to give my daughter a Janome but don't want a dangerous machine in her house since she's a novice.

I'm new here But I had that problem with my DC 2010 and my dealer replaced the foot pedal. There is "something" in the pedal that makes it "Ghost" sew as you put it. I took mine to a workshop and thought I needed a excorist for mine . When mine did it the most was after I had been using it quite a bit, like it over heated, for a lack of a better descpition.

We've replaced more than a handful of foot controls because of this problem. Sometimes cleaning the foot control seems to work for a while, but in the end we end up ordering another.

I have two Janomes, DC3018 and 6600. both of the foot controls sew by themselves. A new foot pedal is $85.00. I am unhappy about this. I was just getting ready to buy another Janome, but will definitely not do so now. This appears to be a defect that I truly hope Janome will replacel them for free.
