Hi,
I am new to the forum and don't have much sewing experience.
Does anybody know how to do a stretch stitch? Is there a specific foot or can I do it with zigzag stitch? This is confusing.. Please help..

There are 2 that would work, the first (you don't mention your model so I'll describe the stitch) and most practical is what I call the lightning bolt stitch. It sort of looks like a narrow zigzag but at an angle. The other one, I think is actually referred to as a knit stitch and it does a back and forth motion and then an over edge motion at an angle. If you mention your model I can be more specific.

A simple narrow zigzag stitch is fine for medium stretch fabrics, the triple stretch stitch doesn't have enough give, the 3 step stitch likewise doesn't have much give but without a waling foot or even feed foot your going to get one layer of fabric stretching more than the other.
Before I treated myself to a serger, I sewed all my stretch fabrics with a narrow zig zag, the built in utility stretch stitches would soon snap once my brood had pulled, yanked, generally abused all their tee shirts, vests and pyjamas. So I gave in and went back to my narrow zigzag with a stitch length of around 2.5 mm.

I agree with digimad and another reason to use a simple narrow zigzag is that it is easy to unpick if should ever need to remove it. Removing the triple stitch is a miserable task and will probably result in making holes in the project.

I will go for the narrow zigzag stitch ( lightning bolt stitch ) since everybody reckons it. Besides the triple stitch doesn't come with my machine.

I have also used it as a stitch in the ditch for quilting.

It looks like stitch 16 in the standard cam ( that's the blue one)

A narrow zig zag works great for a stretch stitch. If you have a machine with at least 30 or so stitches (you don't say what machine you have), you should also have a "serger" stitch - terrible to unpick if you sew an "oops" seam but it really does hold well. I mostly use the "lightening" stitch to reinforce armholes and crotch seams but it does work also as a stretch stitch - it is also a nasty to unpick.
